Hi I just got off the freshman wait list and I was wondering how housing would work since I am past the deadline. Will I just get assigned to a random dorm with a random roommate or will I still have a chance to state my preferences?

@Reach School, you will still have a chance to state your preferences as room and roommate assignments don’t get made until July.

I also just got into W&M from the wait list (!!!) and just sent in my housing preferences. To whom should I send a doctor’s note for allergies?

@Gwenyclip, all of that information should be available on the Tribe Guide website you’ve been using.

I don’t get it. My son was accepted off the wait list in May, and he was told he could not choose any particular dorms and that W and M does not utilize a “roommate match”

My son is a regular admit freshman and it is correct that you can’t pick your dorm. There was a preference letter that they filled out that let you say whether you preferred a large dorm or a small, but there is no guarantee that you would even get that. There were a few questions in it about whether you are a day time or night time person, smoker (although smoking is not allowed in the dorms) etc. that supposedly they use for matching. I honestly don’t think it matters that much or that they follow it that much. But W&M will let you change room mates if yours doesn’t work out and they don’t require “counseling” first or a waiting period like some schools do. I assume if there is no other person wanting to change at the same time, there might be a delay before they could make the change, but most people seem to get along with their room mates. You don’t have to be best friends- just respect each others’ differences and priorities.
Room assignments should go out this month. Since bills are going out next week, I think they must know who is in what dorms by then as those few people who end up with singles pay more than the majority of folks who are in doubles.

Room assignments will be made by the end of the month. Last year housing came out on July 20th around 3PM. William and Mary is pretty good about matching up roommates. Also, if you email res life and put in a specific preference for a dorm, you will probably get it (a few of my friends did that).

I will say that they recently turned some of the best freshman housing into upperclassman housing. Be mindful that the Green and Gold Village (formerly known as the Units) have been renovated (because the frats trashed them). Jefferson is some of the best housing on campus if you want to be near everything in the evening. Yates is probably better if you want to party at night. Ultimately though no one knows what will be better for night life now that the Units are no longer frat housing (they were recently moved into very nice houses with small common spaces to avoid raging parties on campus. House parties will likely be held near Ludwell now.

Good luck!
