Hello everyone. My friend was waitlisted at Marquette and just a few days ago he received a letter in the mail saying he was accepted. This concerns me (Marquette is one of my top choices) because shouldnt the people on the waitlist be hearing from the school after May 1st? Does this mean that many accepted students already told Marquette they are not going there? Does this mean that the school will not have a full class? thanks

There could be many reasons for accepting kids off the waitlist before May1. As you stated perhaps they received a larger number of no’s than they expected before May 1. It is all about enrollment management and one can only try to make educated guesses whether they will attend or not. We have already notified S’s other schools he will not be attending thinking it is only fair to let the admins know asap. In these tough ecconomic times, many families are finding they cannot afford to pay for a school like Marquette. It is very unlikely that Marquette will not have a full class, but even if they don’t why is that of concern? I have seen no evidence that Marquette is having “issues” that would cause me to worry about my S attending there.

Like mamom explained there are many reasons. One major reason is economic another is that a lot of students accepted to other schools like Northwesten, U of Chicago, Notre Dame, etc. in the Midwest, their first choice, have already notified Marquette they will not attend. That is what is supposed to happen and is the fair thing to do. No reason to wait until May 1st to notify and be unfair to students in waiting lists if you know you will not attend.

Son and I were at admitted student day today and now he’s doing an overnight. Absolutely A-1 execution on the event. One of the morning presenters said 22,000 applications were received for 1,800 spots, so I really doubt they’re not going to be full next fall. We’re heading to Gonzaga and Santa Clara next weekend, but I bet his mind is already made up.

Marquette has had no trouble filling the class the last few years – they shoot for just under 2,000.
