What are the chances of getting in if you are put on the waitlist? When will you find out? This is for b-school if it makes a difference.

I think they usually waitlist people so they can compare them with the rest of the borderline students. Does your status actually say waitlist and not "deferred"?

I knew somone who got put on the wait list (didnt get in though). She heard back as late as march i think? I was put on a wait list at Wisc Madison and waited until late february i believe. If they are evaluating all the borderliners then, depending on ur stats, you'd probably have people better and worse than you. I say 50/50?

Theres hope!

I applied in October. I was deferred-manual review for some time. For months I waited, and "Decision made: Waitlist" today turned out to be the crap I had waited 4 months for. I've heard of people at other schools who were on waitlist get off it by making a contact in admissions and being persistant, but is that even possible at a large school like UIUC?

Couldn't hurt right? You could probably even call and ask if this is a common thing to do. The admissions office is extremely personable and helpful.

If you end up not getting in, write a letter explaining how much you want to go and why you think they should reconsider. I have heard stories about people who have done this and found an admissions packet in their mailbox a month later.

Ouch, sounds like this might happen to me....
I'm guessing that they've probably sent out the maximum amount of acceptance letters for business and now everyone else is going to be wait listed. I guess we have to wait till some people turn down their acceptances and hope we're near the top of the wait list.

Do you guys thinks that if one person has been wait listed from a particular school, everyone else who is waiting is probably already wait listed by default??????

^ Not necessarily. When a friend of mine was waitlisted from uiuc we both found out in about march that we didnt get in. She had been waitlisted, I had not recieved anything about a waitlist. So i guess you could still have a regular no-waitlist decision come out at the same time.

:( i was waitlisted today.....man i hate it

Ok so how does the wait list work out????
Here's a hypothetical situation.
They admitted 1500 students to business school. only 1450 replied bakc and said they will attend. does that mean the other 50 will come from the wait list? also say for example in my situation I applied to business and was denied to business due to no more space BUT was not wait listed and ended up being offered to go to a diff. college major because they liked my stats. do you think they would pick me before everyone on the wait list or forget about me and go to the wait list???

i was skimming so i didn't understand the hypothetical situation at all, but basically, either they're evaluating everyone like krbarrett said (but "Deferred" would actually make more sense here), or in my opinion, they've filled up all the business spots available (come on, it's rolling admissions, of course spaces would be filled up by now, esp for business!), and now all you can hope for is that admitted students choose a different school, whether uic was their safety or they can't pay, it's too far, or whatever their reason is... and you can hope that you're near the top of the waitlist. but that's just what i think.

My son has been accepted to the School of Engineering and his intended roommate just got waitlisted for LAS. We called the Office of Admissions and Records and asked when the waitlisted students might hear so my son could make a roommate decision and were told that no one would be asked off the wait list until all the replies were in by May 1st. One day after we called we heard a story of a waitlisted student being accepted to LAS. We have no idea what is going on. J

Did anyone else who is wait listed get stats in their letter about how many were wait listed last year and how many got in? I don't want to pass along misinformation because I have not seen the letter personally myself but my son came home today saying that his intended roommate (the wait listed one) got a letter giving last years number of wait listed students and the number who got in. J

I can't speak for the other colleges, but my letter told me the stats for business: 330 students were on the waitlist and 0 were eventually accepted.

Wow - I didn't actually believe the numbers were in the letter but apparently the letter to the LAS students said about the same thing.

yea i got the letter today, it makes me cry. Last year, about 435 were waitlisted for LAS and 0 were accepted. If this is indeed the case, then i don't think any one has a chance.

To give you some hope. No one knows yet whether last year was an abberation. What happened was a surprise to the university. They base their number of offers to admit on the number they hope to enroll and use historical figures. Last year, the acceptance rate overall of those offered acceptance jumped almost 4 percentage points above the developed historical rate and resulted in higher enrollments than they expected. The effect was that few could be taken from the waitlist. They do not know yet whether that jump was just for that year or a trend. Some guess it may have reflected nothing more than Illinois' name recognition went up because its basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the nation and people were deciding whether to accept admission during the time when that was big news. It may simply also reflect the continuing trend of more opting for public universities because private's are just getting out of reach financially for more and more families. That jump also meant that they lowered their overall offer of admission rate somewhat for this year in case the acceptance rate repeated itself. Thus, there is some chance it will be a little better this year for those on the waitlist.
