I want to enroll in a specific discussion section but it is on a wait list now. If I go on the wait list, will I still be enrolled in the lecture? or if not, can I sign up for an open discussion section AND be put on the wait list for this section (to make sure I'm enrolled in the lecture)?

MyUCLA will tell you. It's possible to be on the waitlist for a discussion while being enrolled in its associated lecture. If the text for the discussion/lecture on MyUCLA for Winter 2007 is in red, then you're on the waitlist for it.

on MyUCLA, the lecture time and location appears in red. On the schedule of classes, it added 1 to the wait list for the discussion and the wait list for the lecture. But on URSA, my status in the lecture is H("Held/enrollment waitlisted in primary sections"). So am I enrolled in the lecture?

No, you're not enrolled in the lecture.

why don't they make it so that i can enroll in the open discussion section, and be put on the wait list for the wait-listed-discussion?

You can't enroll in 2 discussions, or else everyone would hog spaces. :)

How fast can a 30 people discussion fill up if it currently has 4 people? I don't want to end up being left off the whole course...

That depends on the desirability of the discussion's time-slot and TA...
Some discussions jump from 5/30 to 25/30 in a single day.
