just a word to the wise, tufts is absolutely going to the waitlist

Why this year more than any other year?

how do you know this?? that is really great news. more than usual would you say?

i have no idea, i just know theyre going to the waitlist

How do you "know"?

Besides, it's not like that information is earth-shattering. Most schools do dip into their waitlists; the more interesting information is how far they do. For example, for the class of 2009, 0 people got off the waitlist. Other years a hundred might get off.

i was under the impression that people were overenrolling and the class of 2011 would be too LARGE, in which case, no waitlist.

this is what happened in 2009, as lolabelle mentioned - the class of 2009 is like two hundred students bigger than what Tufts is used to, or something like that.

Friend of DD called Tuft's admin today. No one is coming off their waitlist this year - class of 2011 acceptees have filled all their spots.

this news is not good news. boo. (i called to confirm: and it is true. although there is a very very very slight chance a few might come off if spots open up at other schools and tuft acceptees move their deposit. but this is certainly not something to count on..)

I was accepted at Duke yesterday, and my friend at Northwestern, so we are two of those people. It could definitely happen and open up spots for you, but I have no idea what to do now! :-/

Ok, why do people post false information? I work in the admissions office and no, we are NOT using the waitlist at all this year.

then why do you guys even have a waitlist =_=

um...because...in the event that not enough people enroll to make a full class, they'll fill in the holes with the waitlist?

Actually, a good deal of schools don't use their waitlist.

Schools go to their wait lists when their estimates and projections fall short of reality. That is the plain and simple truth. It is a guessing game and varies from year to year and school to school. Last year JHU had 1000 kids on a waitlist and took 0. This year they went to their waitlist.

It's also used as a bit of a self-correction system, as I understand. Meaning, if a bunch of people enroll but there's a shortage of black kids, or too many girls, or not enough Philosophy majors, then they will take in some black boy who lists his major as Philosophy to make it more balanced. For this reason I actually think that in some cases it is important if you list your major as Women's Studies or American Studies or Classics, you know, those obscure random ones that some people scoff at and call "not real majors." These departments do require a certain amount of kids if they intend to survive, so sometimes if you indicate a strong interest in that not-as-popular major (and by 'strong interest' I mean, you can't just list it when everything in your record indicates that you want to be premed or IR...your activities/coursework/recommendations/essay should support this interest) they may take you in order to keep that department running.
