Hey,

I applied to UNC back in January for EA but was deferred. I recently found out that I was wait listed and the latest I can expect to hear by is June 30th. I would have to say the weakest part of my application was my SAT score. I was considering re-taking the SAT again and sending UNC the new score. Would this improve my chances of being accepted off the wait list or is it too late at this point?

Thank you

And do you guys think it would help to send a letter to UNC letting them know you’re still very interested. Even if it’s really short but at least adds something to your application. I was deferred and then waitlisted too and the only new thing they have from me is my 1st semester grades and the fact that I accepted a spot on the waitlist. What do you think?

It definitely helps to let them know that you really would attend if offered acceptance, especially out of state. They don’t want to offer admission to someone who is just collecting top notch admissions for bragging rights. D was waitlisted and then offered admission in May several years ago. It certainly doesn’t always happen, so make your choice of the options you have, which are likely to be pretty great if you are on the waitlist anyway. There are many paths to the happy ending.

Same happened to me! I think sending in new test scores would help, it certainly can’t hurt. I was wondering if we should send them our current grade/ 3rd quarter updates if they are good? And would we address the letter to our admin rep or who?

The letter I got today from UNC said they don’t recommend sending any additional materials except for a final transcript.

Do you think they will let waited listed people know by June the 30th or could it be before? Anyone with some history on this?

I believe a girl in our school was notified in mid June last year.

Check out the following College Confidential post, titled “To Those on the Waiting List, There is Hope,” which appeared two days ago on one of the Emory University threads:

To those on the waiting list, read this article [by Jay Mathews, in the Washington Post, March 13, 2009].

I was waitlisted by emory 2 years ago, and then I was accepted off the waiting list 2 weeks after original decisions came out, because I did EXACTLY what this article told me to do. Read the part on how to get off the waiting list.

Getting waitlisted is not the end of the world, it will all work out in the end. I am currently finishing up my sophomore year at Emory with a 3.8 gpa as a pre-med. Like Kevin Garnett said “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”!!!
