As a senior looking to major in oboe, I was put on the wait list for New England Conservatory. My first choice of the schools I did get accepted to is Indiana University. I got a $10,000 scholarship a year from the music department.
NEC and IU both have amazing oboe teachers- of the tops in the country- along with both having wonderful programs. I was wondering if anyone knew what the chances are of those on the wait lists for places like NEC to be accepted.
Any input on the two schools would also be appreciated.

I vote for Indiana (Is this a democracy? :) )

My S has a very good friend who is studying oboe at Indiana. She chose that school because her oboe teacher (in Atlanta) said that was one of the best places in the country for oboe. If you got in there, congratulations! The teacher there did a master class at Juilliard recently and my S talked with her a bit (he doesn't play oboe, but talked with her because of his friend) and said she was really nice.

I don't remember where all she applied, but Indiana was her first choice. I personally LOVE the Indiana campus (it's on my D's list), and do NOT like the NEC campus (using the term loosely).

My son is at Indiana; he was rejected by NEC on trumpet. He loves Indiana and is learning a LOT. And yes, he did say the NEC campus was rather depressing; he was there on a youth symphony tour. But IU is a very pretty campus.

I have no idea about the waitlist, but I'd say you have a great offer from Indiana, so even if NEC doesn't come through, you have a wonderful education ahead of you.

Hm... I don't like NEC's campus either. I have nothing personal against it (I was accepted), but when I auditioned, the "judges" seem cold and impersonal (okay, I know it may also be the same with other music schools, but still I don't feel welcomed there), and walking down the hallway in the building I felt it's a a little bit gloomy. And when I was waiting in the hallway waiting for a warm-up room, I could not read very well because of the poor light even though it was at noon.

NEC is a dump. While there are some excellent instructors, I know a number of kids who have transferred out. Quality of life isn't very good. Plus, it is incredibly expensive. Go with IU.
