I was surprised to learn that I am wait-listed at the university of minnesota. I scored a 32 on my ACT and have a 3.3 GPA, but I applied to the liberal arts school which has a much lower average ACT. Is there any chance I could still get in?

I was waitlisted as well. I only have a 25 act and 3.5 gpa though. I applied to carlson (fat chance I know) and cla. I don’t plan on doing anything because I don’t plan on attending u of m anyways. But if I wanted to I would send in a transcript with updated grades if you haven’t done so because it shows them you’re still interested. Don’t give up hope because you haven’t completely been rejected yet. Good luck to you I think you have a good shot at getting accepted!

I was also wait-listed. I am incredibly surprised, having a 3.7 and 31 ACT. It is weird because I was admitted to other schools that tend to have higher standards. Maybe Minnesota just had a lot of higher degree applicants this year?

Also waitlisted as a transfer student… I thought I was an easy in as well.

2 years ago they had 35,000 applicants for 7000 spots. I am surprised by some of the waitlisted stats. I do know that many kids apply as early as Aug or Sept and since it is rolling admission, I suppose it is possible that the spots fill up fast. I also know that many kids use the UofMN as a safety and ultimately select other schools. So keep your back up plans, but hang tight cause many spots do open up.

This year, UMN had 43,000 applicants for a freshman class of 5,400. Just telling you now, very few people on here are going to want to help you because they are trying to get off the waitlist as well, so they don’t want to screw up their chances by getting someone else off the waitlist when it could have been them. Look around the UMN site and call them. Ask them directly about what you can do, there are a couple things. Asking people on here probably will not help you. And for the record, CSOM and CSE are not likely to let people in from the waitlist. Those are the two most competitive schools.

UMN claims they have holistic admissions when they really only base their decision off of GPA and class rank. If you do not have a GPA over 3.5 and do not rank in the top 25% of your class, well, that makes things difficult. Possible, but difficult. This is not to be mean, it is just a way to weed out the huge amount of applicants, and as much as I hate this way of admitting students, it makes sense. Applicants were EXTREMELY competitive this year ( for example, at CSE, the average applicant had a 31 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, and ranked in the top 6% of their class, and the other schools have only gotten more competitive).

I wish you the absolute best of luck.

I know of at least one person who got accepted but who will most likely NOT be attending! My son was accepted a couple of months ago but is most likely going to University of Alabama or Mizzou. Waiting for the final financial aid packets, however. So there’s a spot probably open by mid-April Good luck at getting in! Sounds like a great school to me… except maybe for the weather?

I just called and was told that I was waitlisted because I put marketing as my interest even though I applied to CLA. So they considered me pre business for some reason and looked at my 2 business classes (my only C’s in college) and waitlisted me. Apparently they thought I was just going to try to transfer out of CLA… Which I wasn’t. So that’s dumb. So I’m going to appeal and hopefully they’ll look at more than just my 2 business classes. But if I get into UW Madison (who looks at all grades) I’m going there. Good luck to everyone.

I talked to my counselor who called a recruiter, and they basically said there wasn’t anything that I could do. I am sending a letter in to appeal, with a letter of recommendation from my counselor, but even the recruiter said that this most likely won’t change anything.

Applied to the U in October with Carlson being my first choice and CLA being my second and I knew at the time that Carlson was kind of a stretch for me but I was feeling pretty confident about getting into CLA. I was really surprised when I was wait listed from the whole university last week and sent in an appeal the next day. This week I checked my application tracker Friday night and it had changed from the paragraph about being wait listed to “Your application is being very carefully considered” then checked it again around noon the next day and it said I had been admitted into Carlson at the U. I am so happy since Carlson was my first choice but I was starting to lose hope of being admitted into the U at all since I had read many posts about how the UofM only admitted 2% of the people on the waitlist but I don’t think that’s necessarily true. So don’t lost hope if you are waitlisted because honestly its do able to be admitted from it.

@labean70 Congratulations! I have some questions if you don’t mind.

Did your appeal show up in the application tracker or did it just switch back to being carefully considered?

How long after you sent in your appeal did your status change?

How long was your letter of appeal?

Thanks!
- No it didn’t show my appeal just switched back to being carefully considered on Friday.
- It took a week and a couple days before I was admitted.
- My letter of appeal was a little less than a page. Basically I said I really wanted to go to the U and I talked about specifically why I was a good candidate for Carlson and my future plans.

Are you guys from out of state? My D was accepted (out of state) and she has a 3.96 gpa, but only a 28 act. She is in the top 10% of her school though. Just seems that her act would have more weight or in her case, less.
Maybe its the out of state thing? Anyways, good luck. She did apply for ED.

Parent

I got waitlisted as well, im transferring from a community college in Minnesota. I’ll only have a year of transferable credits after this semester but I have maintained a cumulative GPA of a 4.0. My high school stats are less than impressive with a ACT of a 21 and a GPA of a 3.12; however, high school stats shouldn’t have any influence on admissions decision when you have over 26 credits.

@Aymoney44 what college did you apply to within the U?

@TransferGopher well first I chose college of engineering, however, I am being considered for the college of liberal arts for pre-engineering.

Any word yet

I got accepted off the waitlist a few weeks ago.

They said on mine that a decisions was made and emailed to me. I never hot the email. But considering the website did not change I guess I didn’t get off.

I meani I got an email asking me whether I wanted to accept the wait list but I haven’t received the email giving me my wait list decision.
