I'm currently wait listed for ALL of my classes! What are the chances of getting into a class if I'm number 26 (CSE 8A) or number 15 (CSE 8AL) on the wait list? Since I'm wait listed in all my classes and there's no absolute guaranteeing that I'll get in to them, should I add more classes that I need just in case? I have fin aid and can't drop below 12 units, so I'm a little worried. Advice?

In order to get Financial Aid you need register for minimum of 12 units.
Wait list doesn’t count for Fin.Aid
For that reason I didn’t register for CSE 8A.
I would be number 19 on the waiting list.

Usually ~10% of the class will drop. If theres a lot on the waitlist, try contacting the department. Especially if its a crucial major course. They might be opening more seats or another discussion section.

They already opened up classes though it won’t show up on webreg. here’s the email they sent out to all CSE majors.

Dear CSE Freshman,

Many of you have questions about the number of available seats in CSE 8A and CSE 8AL. First of all, I am giving you priority enrollment in these classes. In order to do this, I have to set limits on the number of seats in these classes so that you get this priority enrollment.

If you have questions about CSE 8A and CSE 8AL, please post them via ugradinfo@cs.ucsd.edu.

Warm regards,
Patricia

That being said, some of the classes still will have waitlists even though they technically added more space. like the Alvarado one, only opened up 50 seats but the waitlist is 86+…

This sucks hard.

Computer Science at UCSD is getting hugely congested and impacted. The major is just too hot right now. I was told by several of my professors / CSE dept. functionaries that this year UCSD accepted triple the previous number of fall admits. This is why you guys (i.e. incoming CS majors) are dealing with so much of this wait-list BS and stress. Class enrollment (at UCSD at least) usually isn’t this big of a pain, I promise.

Fear not, UCSD will find a way to accommodate you all, even if that means calling in back-up lecturers, opening up new sections, excluding us upperclassmen and basically pulling one out of their hineys for what is by far the biggest class of incoming CS majors to ever hit UCSD. I predict 300+ lower-division classes across the board, every quarter, in the near future. Rough times for the CSE department…

Um… does this mean I’m screwed as someone who’s been admitted as Undeclared, wants to declare a major in computer science, but hasn’t been able to do so yet?

You can declare once school starts (or eariler, not sure) and you’ll get in. As long as you switch before it becomes impacted if it does.

@AndrewL - Thanks! I’ll try to change my major ASAP. Tritonlink is letting me click on the change major/minor tab after I signed up for classes … although it’s been erroring out of me when I try to actually change it.
