My D received notification that she's on the waiting list for vocal performance at Eastman.
This seems to be good news/bad news. I have gone back & read some of last year's threads on the wait list experience, but we're looking for any advice as to what to do now other than wait...and wait...

metmom,

Welcome to CC. Does your daughter have any other acceptances? If so, you may want to think seriously about which of those schools to attend should Eastman not come through. Hopefully you will know one way or another by May 1 when decisions are due, but waitlist acceptances can extend months later than that.

Some schools allow you to make the housing deposit separately from the commitment to attend. If she has an admission at a school with that policy, it may be worth while sending in the housing deposit there, particularly if housing is tight in that area. Many will refund the deposit if you cancel by a certain date.

Another possibility is to start thinking about a gap year and how it might be spent preparing for next year’s auditions.

Metmom, many voice students who have acceptances from Eastman also have acceptances from a number of top schools–they won’t all say yes to Eastman. Eastman’s top scholarship don’t usually cover more than 1/2 tuition costs, so financial considerations may push some students to turn down Eastman. Rochester doesn’t seem to be on many people’s top favorite cities list either, so Eastman may lose students to the other conservatories/universities based upon location alone. So I think your D has a decent, maybe excellent chance of getting off that wait list.

I’d have her contact Eastman admissions and the voice program, go visit if she can and have lessons with several teachers, or at least contact the teachers she’s interested in, let everyone know that if she’s accepted, she’ll attend. You might do a search here–there are plenty of posts that talk about how to demonstrate interest in a WL school. We know of a (flute) student who came off Eastman’s wait list in early June two years ago, so be patient.

In the meantime, if your D has another acceptable offer, you may want to send in a deposit if you haven’t heard from Eastman by May 1. I don’t believe you have to worry about the housing deposit at Eastman, since all students are required to live in the dorms the first 3 years.

Good luck! PM me for more info re Eastman (voice) if you like.
