Wait Listed For NB School of Nursing

Hi, I was wait listed for the school of nursing. I have a 97.1 GPA and got and 1850 on my SATs, 1260 for just math and reading. I have a bunch of really great ECs including a job, and a really good essay, so I am a bit confused as to why I was not accepted. I was accepted into SAS and the business school, but the only way my parents will let me attend Rutgers NB is if I get into the nursing school, and it is my top school so I am pretty desperate. I am planning on contacting the admissions office(writing a letter to express extreme interest or something else) and submitting my first semester grades where I average a 98. I was wondering if anyone knows of someone who was accepted earlier than May 1st or the percentage of people offered admission after May 1st for Rutgers in general or the nursing school! Thanks.

Forgot to mention I am in-state as well!

Nursing this year is so competitive. I have a friend with a 4.2 GPA out of 4.6 & a 2200 SAT and is wait-listed. She is also in-state.

I am a current student in the nursing school. As the above poster said, the program is extremely competitive to get into and is actually split between the Newark and New Brunswick campuses with only 30 freshman on each. An information session I attended before enrolling said that they have about 3000 applicants and only accept about 100 between both campuses. There is also a lot of increased interest in the program because of the recent merger with UMDNJ and the medical school so therefore its only getting more difficult to get into. If you have any more questions about the program feel free to ask.

I have something like a 3.74 GPA, and got a 1940 (650-640-650) on my best SAT. I’m pretty sure my essay is really good but I don’t have any extra-curricular activity’s past a bit of time spent with a robotics and a debate club. I’ve also never taken honors or AP courses. Rutgers Camden accepted my into their nursing program less than a week after they received all my papers (transcript, SAT, etc.) That was with regular application. New Brunswick still says “In Progress” though. What is the chance that New Brunswick would accept me? They still technically have until Feb 31st to give a final answer from what I understand. Camden is great, but I already have to take out loans and NB is just a 15 minute train ride from me, meaning I could commute instead of stay at dorms. Soooo much cheaper. Any thoughts?

From what I understand, the nursing school is a little bit unpredictable with admissions just because the program is so small and from what I’ve heard from the dean of the school is that they really look at each applicant holistically to try and determine how much of a chance of success they have in the program, rather than just looking simply at test scores and GPA. I am a current student at New Brunswick, and when I applied my test scores were a little below average (I had about a 1900 SAT), but I had a 4.0 unweighted high school GPA (5.2 weighted or something like that) with dual enrollment and AP courses. I do know people who had much higher test scores than me who were rejected from the school, which shows that test scores are not everything. Most of the people who I am in the program with graduated in the top 5 percent of their class, with GPAs and test scores well above average and had taken APs or college courses in high school. Most (although not all) had volunteered in a hospital or some sort of health care setting prior to show their interest in nursing. That is just to give you an idea of the average students who I am currently in the program with, although I am sure that there are people who lie outside those guidelines. You probably won’t find out about your acceptance until about February 31, as the nursing school is usually one of the last to send out notifications and sends them all out at the same time (meaning admissions are not rolling like the rest of the NB schools such as SAS and SEBS, I believe (although I could be wrong) that they wait until they have received all applications to make decisions) If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I was wait listed for nursing as well and only recently (yesterday) found out that I’ve been accepted off the wait list, so there’s still hope! I don’t know if this had any impact on my acceptance but I previously called the admissions and asked why I had been wait listed and the woman filled out an action form for me saying I would get my answer in about two days but then 20 minutes later I think one of the admissions counselor herself called me to talk about my scores and what I could do now. So I would recommend calling admissions and asking them to fill out that form for you. Good luck!
