Wait Listed... Questions?

After having two sons attend USNA my third son recieved a letter that he was waitlisted for NAPS. The year was a crazy one. He was told by his BGO that he had a nomination last summer after NASS so we were not too worried about it when he didn't get a nomination from the Congressman. His stats were 1240 SAT, 3.93 GPA, he is a state wrestler, a minorty, works two jobs, is in the Show Choir and performed in many musicals. His letters of Rec were great from teachers and from others.

In February, he called the Academy and learned that the nomination he thought he had, he did not have and his BGO and the Admissions staff made an error as he didn't deserve a nomination reserved for MOH winners sons and daughters. Anyway there was a bunch of scrambling and we were told that he would be attending NAPS. Now, we find out he has been waitlisted.

He says he will try again for the class of 14 if he doesn't get into this class but I can tell he wants to be with the kids he knows who are in the class of 13.

What are the chances of him getting in after being on the waitlist? We moved four times during his first two years of high school, so I am thinking they didn't think he had chalenging enough classes to cut USNA right off the bat. He is fine with NAPS but wants to go this year.

Anybody know anyone who got in after being on the waitlist? When did they find out?

Sorry this is my first post and I am asking so many questions. It has been a tough day.

Not sure I’m following this. Unless your spouse is a Medal of Honor winner, the only type of nom that could come this early would be Presidential. And, honestly, you don’t have that until you apply for it.

Stats in a vaccuum are hard to analyze, although your son seems to have done all of the right things. I’m surprised he saw his teacher recs as they are not provided to the student. I suppose if they decided to share them with him . . .

Like I said. Not sure what’s going on here . . . you or your spouse is either an MOH recipient or not.

Depends on how many people who were offered NAPS turn it down. Could be 0%; could be much higher. It’s something over which you (and, honestly, USNA/NAPS) have no control.

USNA indicated that folks on its waitlist (for USNA, not NAPS) won’t hear until at least the end of the month. Could be later. You should have a Plan B.

I know it is both disappointing and frustrating to be wait-listed. I can tell you that, unlike some civilian colleges that quite frankly wait list students to make them feel better about being rejected, USNA (and the other SAs, I presume) does not do this. These are folks who just missed the initial cut and, if there are enough turndowns, will be offered available slots.

If it doesn’t work out this year, be sure to contact CGO in June to find out what parts of the package were weak and work on those for next year. Guessing about why you didn’t get in is dangerous – in my experience, CGO will tell you (your son) what needs improvement. They are the only official source, although your BGO may have some insights based on experience. BGOs are not automatically told why certain students were not offered appointments to USNA/NAPS – we may be told if we ask.

In answer to your question, when his BGO came to our home to interview him, he said that he had his nomination and showed on paper in his notes where it said it was a MOH one. I questioned it and he said that the Academy had given him one. I have a son who has done two tours in Iraq and my father was a col. in the Air Force. To be sure, a few days later, my son called the Academy and asked about his nomination…he was told by the admissions officer he spoke with that he did indeed have a nomination already and it was given to him the previous summer after summer seminar.

This spring he called again and found that he didn’t have a nomination after all. Someone or two had made an error. He was devestated and told them so. He turned down a nomination to WP and to MMA because he was under the impression he had one to USNA. That is neither here or there because the addmission officer asked him if he would be okay with NAPS and he said he would.

So, now he is waitlisted and you answered my question about what were his chances of going to NAPS. Thank you

I have PM’ed you.
