Wait Time Between Retaking SAT Tests

My son took the SATs once as a Junior and wanted to take it a second time in June 09 but missed it. Therefore, his second time will be as a Senior in October. If he doesnt get the increase in scores that he thinks he needs (he got 520 math, 520 verbal, 560 written and probably needs 600's in each for the schools he is looking at) then he will probably need to take it a third time. Should he take them again right away in Nov or should he wait until Dec or Jan? I have heard some conflicting advise (e.g. taking them back to back months will not show a significant increase as compared to waiting another month or more in between).

Note: He will be applying Early Action to two of his top three schools. Their EA deadlines are Nov 1st.

How does he do on the practice tests? Do they show improvement?

Rather than thinking about what to do if he fails to score high enough in October, focus on doing well in October.

Have him study as hard as he can between now and the October test - no video games, no party, no tv, no movies. In fact, have him lock himself in a room with no internet access as soon as he’s done with his homeworks on weekdays and all day on weekends. No pain, no gain.

If he follows through with this plan, he’ll make the numbers given how close he was last time.

Keep in mind that the registration deadline for November is before October scores are sent out.

“Have him study as hard as he can between now and the October test - no video games, no party, no tv, no movies.”

I have to agree…that is ultimately the best and only solution that will work!
