Okay so my top choice, dream school is UCSB.
But as a back up I chose Cal Poly (although it’s almost as incredible as UCSB).
Now here is the thing, if I don’t get into UCSB (about a 50% chance), then no matter what I wanted to go to Cal Poly.

SO I asked my college counselor and he said if I wanted to ensure my chances of getting into Cal Poly, just declare nutrition as a major and I’ll be accepted for sure.
So I did SOME research (but not much since i’m a first generation college student and still don’t completely understand the whole ‘choosing a major thing’) And I DID see that I was above average for the acceptance rate for food science majors. So I declared nutrition, like my counselor said.

Then I just now read on some of these threads that nutrition is SUPER hard to get into, like a requirement of 4.0 and above.

I’ve got a 3.8 weighted, ACT of 27, and SAT of 1830.
So what I’m now thinking is that I don’t even have a chance!?!?

I’m so upset. All this time I was feeling great cause I was thinking that if I don’t get into UCSB, I’ll have an incredible back-up waiting for me.

Should I rid of all hope?

Has anyone on here been accepted into Nutrition with simular stats??

do you even want to do nutrition? it will be really hard to change a major, i hope you knew that.
Dude, none of the majors are easy… don’t think like that.
Why don’t you consider other universities? like UCD? UCI? SFSU? SJSU? UCSC? iono…

It looks like you are above the average for food sciences. Here is the profile for cal poly if you haven’t seen it yet. <a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions; The accepted average gpa for the college you applied to is 3.69 and average act is 26. It seems like you should get in, but your counselor gave some bad advice… I don’t think cal poly should be anyone’s safety school; pretty much every major is impacted.

I really think you have a chance for Santa Barbara, I mean more than you have at Cal POly. In my opinion, Cal Poly is harder to get into than Santa Barbara; I know it depends on major too, but if you compare their acceptnace rates, then you would see. Just saying. Good luck on everything!

Yeahh but apparently some of the other food science majors are easier (not easy, but easier) to get into. I honestly would have declared one of those instead had I known.
…I know that sounds bad but whatev, I’ll admit that I just want to get in… Don’t judge. :p

And I did apply to UCSC as well, but that was just incase hell froze over because I was told that I would get into Cal Poly, no problem. …and going into this whole college thing blind, I allowed my self to be somewhat guided, by my GUIDANCE counselor.
Well, I hear that hell has started to look pretty icy… D:

If you do end up at Cal Poly, I hope you’re cool with Nutrition, because it’s next to impossible to change majors, especially in your first year.

(And as an arbitrary side note, I cringe when I hear someone say that Cal Poly is their safety. I’m going for Graphic Comm and am thanking the gods of admissions offices that I got in.)

I’m planning on switching into nutrition, I applied for food science since it is similar and less impacted. I wouldn’t worry about it, your probably gonna get in, and plus u’ll most likely get into ucsb, and that is my dream school as well, but unfortunately my stats don’t look good enough.

don’t worry haha, not judging. i just think you have a higher chance to get into UCSB and i hope you will too. good luck your with your future endeavors! haha

1, find a major you really want to do, not just one your councilor told you is easy to get into. you will find out real quick that you will be unhappy overall if all you do is go to college for college and not the education

look at other schools. ucsc is by far WAY easier to get into, but it is not a bad school… and its gorgeous! it just so happens tho that many accepted applicants chose to go elsewhere. look at ucsc, uci, ucm, ucr, and for a non- science major, ucd. i have at least one friend at each of those schools and they love it at each respected campus.

you are still a decent candidate for cp OR ucsb. id say more chance for ucsb though to be honest.

ps, like someone already said, you will NOT have an easy time trying to switch majors at cp… its near impossible. especially if you try to switch in as an undergrad into a major having any title including “engine”

I think you have a good chance at getting into UCSB. Your stats are great and it helps that you’re a first generation college student (assuming you mentioned that in your essay).

You really need to visit that guidance counselor and let her know that Cal Poly is not a “safety” school. That is just BAD advice and she can spare another student this type of anguish. Good luck to you. I also think you will get into UCSB!

Just a quick comment about UCSB and Cal Poly. My nephew was not accepted to Cal Poly, but he was accepted to UCSB. (this was a couple of years ago, but it still speaks as to how competitive, and what a good school, that Cal Poly is.

I don’t know how much harder nutrition is to get in during regular decision, but i got in with almost the exact same stats as you for nutrition during ED.

3.9 Cal Poly GPA
SAT: 1230/1600, 1830/2400
no work experience, but i have a leadership position and full hours marked for extra curriculars. Good luck!

You shouldn’t apply for a major that you don’t want to continue with. Not because it’s impossible to change, but because it’s people like you who mess up class sizes and cause programs to be impacted.
