How would top schools (specifically MIT and Stanford) react to a year off before college?

For example..

I have been through the application process and have applied and been accepted to five colleges. Regrettably, I did not go for any of the Ivys and reaches, since my SAT and ACT scores were good... but not ivy-league good.

Hypothetically speaking, if I cancelled my enrollment at the school that I chose to attend and decided to take a year off to retake the SAT and ACT several times and maybe do some volunteer work, would I be as strong as a freshman straight out of high school in the application process? I know that transfer admissions are a lot harder than freshman admissions... so would this option to wait a year and restart the college application process be worth it?

I agree with Smallcolleges, the reasoning behind that is taking the standardized tests “multiple” times is frowned upon by most college admissions. They really don’t want u taking them more than twice. Also, cancelling enrollment is not looked upon either.

Wait, I thought they don’t care how many times you take the tests?

Why punish someone who may not be the brightest to start, but they work hard, study a lot, take each test 4-5 to get a pretty good score? I thought this was the land of opportunity?

There is no possible way that I will take this route… it was just a hypothetical situation. I will not wait another year for college. I was just wondering if it has been done, or if anyone thinks it could be done.

May I ask where ur going? A lot of people on these forums beat themselves up for going to great schools that just aren’t HYPSMC. I’m sure ur future school is great.

I am staying in Florida for financial reasons, and I will be attending the University of Central Florida.
I was accepted to the “big, well-known” school in Florida, University of Florida, but I turned them down, because University of Central Florida was more of a match for my Computer Science major.

I think that I will do well at UCF, but it would also be nice to attend MIT or Stanford, since they are well known for Computer Science.
