Thank you and is it possible to take all these courses the first year?
@rickqwert Your PSU guidance counselor can help guide you through this.
I would think it would be possible, but also silly to try to take all of those classes in 2 semesters if you don’t have to. Why would you want to?
@rickqwert : you can’t because they’re a sequence. You AP scores may excuse you from Calc1+2 so you’d start in calc 3 but ask for a retired calc 2 final exam to see if you’d get it nearly all questions correct because starting freshman year in 230 can mean immediate GPA death.
@MYOS1634 Yes I understand now, but wouldn’t this mean that you’re essentially starting your major “late” because of the ETM courses?
All these courses are part of your major.
You can complete them by the end of your 3rd semester or the end of your 4th semester, depending on whether you need to drop or retake a class.

An alternate path (less likely to weed you out):
Your first semester, you’re better off taking Foreign Language at the appropriate level ( 2 or 3), English 15/30, Math at the appropriate level, and CS 121, that’s 14 credits and plenty for your first semester. If you wish to add a class, Sociology or Psychology or another social science would do but it’d be really ambitious - remember that it’s not enough to understand each class, you have to be able to handle them all AND do better than 50% your classmates.
Then second semester you’d continue your math sequence + the CS sequence, and either take a social science or CAS + 1st year seminar+ Physics, or both social science and CAS + 1st year seminar.
2nd year would be the Physic sequence, the intermediate CS sequence, the upper level math sequence, and one humanities/arts/social science class per semester. [if you took Physics Spring freshman year you’d take an extra arts/humanities class then.]
So no deferral notifications yet?
@Sophley Not yet on my portal.
got my decision on the 13th! Committed to UP the next day
My Daughter was accepted on 12/19.
DUS with Summer start (applied directly to summer)
3.7 W GPA, 26 ACT
She committed yesterday!
My daughter got accepted into the summer program as a DUS major. I was surprised as her stats were higher than some other people we know who were admitted to communications at UP for the Fall. She applied DUS as she wasn’t sure if she wanted communications or business and this was the advise of her admissions rep.
Her GPA is 3.677 with a 1310 on her SAT and alot of dual enrollment college classes. She is not sure she wants to start in the summer due to some other commitments.
Has anyone ever either emailed their admissions rep or called admissions to ask them to reconsider to a fall start possibly even changing to a communications major and if so did it work?
If you got into summer that means you were already considered for fall but weren’t admitted.
DUS is not the least competitive major at Penn State for admissions any longer. Lots of very strong students apply DUS because they want business or engineering and want a better chance at admissions. Communications has been less competitive than DUS in the last couple of years.
If your daughter was admitted for summer, she was already evaluated for fall and denied. Then she was evaluated for her second choice starting date, which was summer. The only way you can ask to get your admissions reconsidered is to change your application - which in your case would be changing the major as that is the only thing left to change. That being said, if her end goal is business, she needs to be in DUS or Smeal pre-major to get into the business school at the end of sophomore year. You could get reconsideration as a communications major, but then you’d have to change to DUS eventually.
My cousin’s kid got into summer and requested fall and got it so its possible! request! worst is they say no! @terps1990
The only way your cousin’s kid got into fall after getting into summer is (a) they applied directly to summer and then asked for reconsideration to fall or (b) they materially changed part of their application and asked to be reconsidered.
When you apply for fall and put summer as the backup option - and are accepted for summer - you are ALREADY denied for fall in the major you applied for and then you were accepted for summer. If you apply straight to summer, you are never considered for fall, so you CAN ask for reconsideration for fall in the same major.
You cannot be denied fall and ask for reconsideration in the same major to fall again…I mean, you can - but the answer will be the exact same.
@jlhpsu he was originally accepted Altoona his second choice then reconsidered DUS summer then reconsidered fall… I was a bit surprised but most schools when you go undecided can be accommodating I suppose
Penn State website says they will start releasing Financial Aid decisions in February. Has anyone seen this info arrive earlier?
Also, should we more or less assume that non-Pell Grant families will not receive any need based financial aid from PSU?
My daughter applied rolling in September and has not heard back yet…has this happened to anyone else? Should we assume this means rejection?
@hgurl12345 , Rolling is the last to be reviewed. They evaluate EA applicants, then Priority, followed by Rolling. I would not assume rejection but you may consider calling admissions and asking if her app can be changed to Priority (since she was within the deadline and EA decisions have already been released). Good luck!
Can anybody tell me what the Fall 2020 accepted student deposit fee is to enroll and for housing for University Park?
It was $330 all told. I think $130 is a nonrefundable enrollment deposit and $200 is applied to your housing contract.
