Anyone got in off the waitling list yet? If yes, the please do post in your stats and information about any supplementary things you sent to Carleton. If no, then post... whatever you like =)

At last one thread for those who have been waiting for soo long...I have not heard anything yet :( Is Carleton using its waiting list at all?

I asked an admissions person at Carleton when they'd have admission stats for this years class and was told they'd be finalizing the freshman class this summer (they need to see what national wait list activity is and how that effects them). Harvard expects to take 150-175 from their waitlist and princeton and upenn 90. Anherst expects 25, Swat and Pomona 15-20 each. If any of those 400 or so have put down a deposit at Carleton, they might withdraw to attend elsewhere. It's a giant domino game:)

Good luck to all who are waiting.

I emailed Carleton admissions, and they said that they have not yet made any decision regarding their waitlist. Those who are waiting should expect to hear from Carleton within the next 1-2 weeks. This is kinda confusing coz one guy from facebook claims to have been accepted from the waitlist recently!

wow...Harvard accepting 150 from their waitlist...how many have they waitlisted this year?

ya... carleton is not telling anything... its crazy, when everyone else is so open about it....

There are enough folks who'll switch to an Ivy or the better known name, for whatever reasons. Since those schools seem to be digging deeper into their waitlists, Carleton stands to lose some of those who've already accepted and put down a deposit. So they just won't know for a bit longer.

I know how frustrating the wait must be. The Carletonian reported that (at the time of printing last week) the school had received acceptances from exactly 6 MORE students than their target number for the class of 2012. They have historically had an almost uncanny ability to predict yield.

Carleton didn't turn to their waitlist at all the past few years. BUT, as Bingle pointed out, a large number of elite colleges significantly overestimated yield this year, Harvard in particular, and are using their waitlists pretty liberally. So there is still the possibility that Carleton may lose some enrollees to other waitlists and then turn to its own. Unfortunately, Carleton really can't do much more than advise patience over the next 1-2 weeks. I wouldn't give up hope.

^Which article are you talking about? Could you post a link? As far as I know, Carleton is going to the WL.

The Carletonian

the article is dated May 9th which was last week's.

496 students seems a little low for a carleton class. When I was talking to an admin officer at my interview I asked him a typical class size and he said they shoot for around 510-520 but obviously have had bigger classes. Do you think they will be calling people on an individual basis and waiting to hear back from them before moving on to other applicants, or will they call twenty people and wait to hear from them all?

Who is this person who claims to have gotten off the waitlist on facebook? Is that firsthand, or not so much? I'm so frustrated right now. I think everyone just wants to know.

^^ fair enough dude...im kinda getin restless too...enuf with the elites man...only harvard and princeton are diggin deep...brown does not seem too much bothered...any reasons for that? wont people choose harvard and princeton over brown? damn this year--- f'in f'd up!!

If you do a group search on Facebook for Carleton 2012, you'll find the group he created.

As for class size, they usually seem to settle around 510. Except for the current juniors, who were overenrolled (550).

Class of 2008 (entered fall 2004) had an initial enrollment of 487 which followed a year with 488 enrolled. I suspect that the past 3 years of entering classes of 510+ were the results of unexpected yield or the intention to increase class size. However, Prez Oden has said that Carleton intends to reduce class size in the future, but I have not heard a specific number.

More on last 3 years enrolled classes as reported in the CDS:
fall 2005 542
fall 2006 504
fall 2007 509

In the Carletonian article it is mentioned that the target class size of class of 2012 is '490'. I guess if it does not lose too many students to the ivies, Carleton might not accept many from the waitlist...This is sad :(!

D got a letter today (Saturday, we live only about 30 miles away) saying that their class is full, so they are not admitting off the waitlist at this time. They may have a few openings later in the summer due to waitlist changes at other colleges, and the waitlist will be unranked until that time. They want her to notify them if she wants to stay on the waitlist.

its sad then.... one more wait list college gone for me then... :(

I don't live that far away from Carleton and I didn't receive the letter. Now its killing me. It'll probably come monday. Did it say if they accepted any students off the waitlist? Or give any other information?

Here are some specific sentences from the letter:

"Unfortunately, we are currently unable to offer admission to any candidate on our Waiting List, as our freshman class is full.

It is my understanding that some of the colleges with which we regularly compete for students have recently admitted or may admit some students from their Waiting Lists. This possibility leads us still to have some hope that we will be able to make a few additional offers of admission between now and about June 30. Though I do not want to raise your hopes too high, that small possibility does exist."

The letter is dated May 16, and we got it on the 17th (our mail comes kind of late in the afternoon, so that may have helped it arrive that day). If anyone gets a letter that reads differently, please post here. Thanks!

Does every other applicant on the WL get the above letter or is it only sent to those kept on a shortlist? It could help if anyone else can confirm they got the same letter as mentioned above.
