This is true @WrigleyMom, but won’t apply to my daughter since she’s already on the wait-list. So even if she found someone who was giving up their lease, she couldn’t take it over since she’s “known to Callaway.” At least that’s how I’m interpreting this. It’s just a numbers-waiting game from this point forward.
Wrigley Mom you are correct, but here is the work around. There are many apartments available over the summer.
You can sub-let them going from the wait list at Callaway easy. For some reason Callaway is easy to work with on the summer leases.
Once you are in the building then it is easy to the re-let for more time if you like with Callaway. They had a person that did this last year and moved in with my son after the summer. They just moved down the hallway and no wait list. Callaway will not admit this but it happens. They treat people that are in the building different than a newbie.
I currently have a son in Callaway. I know that there are several that are looking to leave Callaway but are fighting the whole wait list issue with Callaway on the other side of things.
Again, you are correct that EVERYONE is on the wait list for the academic year to lease but NO ONE is looking for summer lease. Callaway is not as weird with the lease issues over the summer. They will help you from the wait list get in the building over the summer, then you have a standing relationship with them to move about within.
People that are in Callaway now and want to get out of the building are in the same boat as you trying to get in. Callaway will not let you and them connect and work out a lease agreement. They don’t want anyone to “Jump Line” but if you are in the building what people don’t know is that you are required to get a NEW person that is not on the “Wait list” then they will accept them. That is leaving people that are on the wait list hanging out to dry. Why they don’t just pull people from the wait list and fill the spots is beyond me?
If you would like for me to find out some information on who has a place that wants to Re-Let I will be happy to get some information for you. Just post a reply here and I will look into this for you.
Thanks ArmyVet. I thought my D’s chance of clearing waitlist at Callaway was high. In fact, there has been a lot of movement in the last week. I got a call late this afternoon that she cleared the waitlist. She was 24th last week. So…D has an apartment/dorm room at Callaway, new towels, sheets and bedspread. Ready to go. I just hope I can make it another two months! I get daily texts from D asking to leave school…because she’s “so done”. Me too!
My son has been on the wait list at Callaway since October. It is very disheartening to me to keep reading about others now buying a sublet in order to cut in line in front of those of us who applied reasonably early and have been patiently waiting to get in. My son is still high enough on the wait list that I continue to have to worry about whether he will get in, especially now that I find out that others are cutting in line in front of us. No one has mentioned that, so finally I just had to throw that out there! Guess that’s just the way life works.
@texasjayhawk what number on the wait list is he? There should be a lot of movement in the next two weeks after more admission decisions from the big schools releasing this week and next are out. If he’s in the 60s Callaway says its a good spot.
@MOMOF5TX, he was at #44 as of Monday. I felt pretty confident about that, until I heard about people paying to get in front. Callaway did mention to me about April being the big time for movement in the list, so I am still hopeful. We have no “plan B” for housing.
Hang in there. You will get into Callaway. They are playing with the list and I don’t know why. They tell the people that are currently in Callaway that need to advertise that they have an apartment available on Craig’s List. You will see lots of them listed there of people wanting to get out of Callaway and you are the people wanting to get into Callaaway and the only people standing in the way of this progress is Callaway! The stress for both parties involved is nuts! -
Callaway’s statement to the residents in Callaway currently is that people drop off the wait list and they want to keep whom ever is on that list for themselves so that they can fill all the empty spots?
Regardless; lock in a lease for the summer and then they are much better about working with you for keeping that same address for the fall or moving about in the building.
I just received an email from Callaway today " Your $400 confirmation fee is due Wednesday, April 1 — and “Our cancellation deadline ends May 1” – Once they Callaway has an idea who is going to be in the building and who is not they start moving quickly on the wait list. AND what they tell you on the phone and what they do in action are two different things. I was asked today that if I was going to want to RE-LET for the summer that they had several people asking about a space in the building. Last week I was told by them to Advertise this on my own and it was my problem to re-let the space. Thankfully there are web sites like this to post information because we the people are caught in the middle on both sides of this issue. –
AND YES !! I replied to Callaway, I NEED OUT!! I am moving to Houston and will be moving out as soon as finals are over. $(*&#$^%@ Seriously! This stuff makes you learn a new vocabulary!
If you are searching to see what is available. There isn’t alot listed on CL but Search under Austin, Housing, then Callaway. You will see what is listed for lease at Callaway. If nothing else let Callaway know that you see people wanting out and you are wanting in. It would be hard to tell you they won’t help you if you are armed with this information.
@texasjayhawk I would doubt there’s that many people who are willing to pay extra for the summer JUST to get in. I think you’re fine at 44 and will get in. However, I totally understand the no plan “b”. We didn’t have one either, but my daughter got off the wait list. You can also check the Texas Parents Facebook page. If you paid to join the Texas Parents group you can get into the facebook group and there’s people there that have rooms at Callaway to relet. Yes you’ll probably have to pay a extra small fee for relet that Callaway requires but it’s another option for you.
You are incorrect, they are in demand for the summer.
Callaway contacted me this week and said that they have several people that would like to take over a space for the summer. The ones on CL are just a hand full also.
No one, once in will let go of the space for a few short months. Normally once leased you are in for the entire term until you graduate.
Unless you have an internship in Austin or you have summer classes you are just paying for something that is setting empty. Parents and students start to realize this 2nd and 3rd year in and wake up.
Callaway will work their butt off to keep you in the building before they take someone off the wait list. Most people once moved in don’t want to move out no matter if they are no using the space or not.
You are not thinking long term, but next year the student is either going to summer school or traveling for an internship to another location and NO ONE will rent something for an internship for a 3 month lease.
Housing is the cheapest part of this all. The school is setup to keep you for 5 year program if possible. You will find that an internship or summer classes are competing with each other in the future. It is nearly impossible to graduate in 4 years without taking summer school. Then you take the summer to build your resume with internships and unable to take summer classes. Catch 22.
Oh, and the re-let fee is only a $250 – The wait list people get what is left over, at least if you look at the ones advertised you can mention that information to Callaway if you like the space. Information is your power here.
Set and wait is stressful and Callaway is in control all the way. I like to have options personally.
I stand corrected, The Summer Re-let fee is only $200 The long term lease is $250 for re-let fees.
And usually the person that is sub-leasing to you will pay that fee. Callaway will explain all of that also.
@texasjayhawk I’ve been in touch with Callaway and they said they’ve really cracked down on the residents / parents trying to sub-let b/c it’s obviously not fair to those students on the wait-list. So that’s good news for those of us who have kids waiting!
Good to hear, @koolmom5105. Thank you!
Happy to say daughter is off the wait-list at Callaway!
@koolmom5105, congrats! As of yesterday, my son had moved up to #30.
hope he gets in @texasjayhawk!
I would love so me information on the Callaway summer lease option to get into Callaway. My son is in, but has a friend that is currently on wait list at above 80. Of course found someone to sublet from but since he is “known” won’t let it happen. Ridiculous to me.
The real issue is that parents are waiting, people in the building are waiting to get out. Callaway is in control. Keep calling Callaway and they will make it happen. I was needing out of a lease and Called every day, within a week someone was in and I was out. Callaway took care of it all. You should be able to get in. If you know if people advertising on Craig’s list then call Callaway about them and they should allow you to get into the building. It is kinda hard to deny you a lease when people are needing to re-lease a space and you know about it. Good luck but seriously go to CL and then call Callaway to discuss. I will be surprised if you are taken care of.
