I just recently found out I was waitlisted at MCS and CIT (MCS being my first choice). At this point, Carnegie Mellon is my first choice; I am definitely going to attend if I am accepted in May. I have a few questions regarding this:

I have a full ride to BU. If I am accepted to CMU, is it likely that they would match this (or at least most of it)? I have read that you can call and try to get more FA if you have a better offer somewhere else…

What are the chances that I will be accepted off of the waitlist? I realize this probably depends on individual applications, but what is the general admit rate for those who accept a place on the list?

What is the best thing to send to the admissions office? I was considering another essay about why I want to attend, or maybe another recommendation. Would those help in any way or does the admissions committee not accept supplementary materials this late?

Thanks in advance.

They will probably only match part of it; definitely not a full match as BU is not a peer institution.

Last year it was pretty high. It is almost impossible to tell though (depends on your stats, what else you send in, how many spaces there are, the yield this year, etc.)

Get another recommendation or two sent in. Perhaps one from an academic source (teacher) and one from a community source (Minister at Church or employer) about your interests and your suitability for Carnegie Mellon. Send in another essay as well but keep in mind that THEY KNOW you want to attend by just accepting the waitlist spot so briefly mention your interests and then move on to more profound topics like specific programs or personal growth.

Good luck Alex, I'm rooting for you.

Great, thanks a lot for the help. I guess if I am accepted it would be worth it in the long-run to pay the extra money to attend CMU (my other choices are BU, NYU, and possibly BC).

Thanks again!
