Waiting List

I emailed admission@williams.edu and the admission director of my area. I only got a reply from admissions and not the director. In my email, I basically said Williams was my number one choice and that I thought the political science and political economy departments were amazing. I don't think it would be wise to ask them whether your application will be reviewed. Just give them updates.

does anyone know when they will be taking people off of the waitlist this week?

2 more people have joined Williams facebook group, probably they called today?

Sending an update is good, but will they look over it? I sent mine on May 10, but I doubt if they would look over all apps again for the second round.

The worst thing is that you never know whether they had already looked over your app or they are about to do that. That sucks.

Does anybody know any other forums for college applicants like collegeconfidential, btw?

Yeah, Abhi I agree with you this may be the worst - that someone sends an update after the application was looked over. I sent mine on May 4, but only got a reply that it will be added to my file.

Does anyone have an idea how the process actually works if they have even no ranking? How do they find out whose app to review and whose not to?

Ksarfeks, you are lucky to have gotten a reply saying that they received your update. That is more than you get if you live in the states. And as far as the system goes, someone in the admissions office told me that they use the waitlist to plug up holes. They have a special committee that does this so you should not send updates to your regional person because he or she may not be involved in the process any longer.

nidachti-

do you know when they are accepting people this week?

I send all my updates to admission@williams.edu. And always get a reply. Plugging up holes - you mean taking athlets, dancers etc? Crap...

I guess I will write another essay for them about why I want Williams and Williams wants me. Maybe this will have some effect...

Btw, does anyone know where I can see stats of waitlist admits?

I don't know when or whether they will be taking people off the waitlist, wakg. Other than one phone conversation with the person who happened to answer the phone in admissions, my only info about admissions comes from last week's Williams Record in which Nesbitt said that they had begun to take peole off the waitlist.

Just checked, 2 more members joined the facebook group, I am damn sure that they called today.

Maybe they will be making more calls tomorrow.

C'mon, guys, we are going insane!!! We should not count how many students were admitted on the basis of facebook or something like that. These people may have been accepted in December - but decided to create their profile today...

I do not what to say, guys... I am so stressed... When were the latest decisions regarding waitlistees send out last year? Is it like middle of July?

Btw, does Williams practice such a thing that they admit you from WL really late, but ask you to enroll next year?

"Don't plan on getting off the wait list" is the best advice I can give you. The article I posted on the Parents' Forum will be a reality check.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117927557746304211-search.html

But Williams isn't specifically mentioned in that article.

From the Admission website:
"Waitlist Status.
We encourage waitlisted candidates who remain interested in Williams to send us a short update detailing activities and achievements since submission of their applications. We have begun to make offers to waitlisted candidates, and will notify admitted students directly if they are admitted off of our waiting list."

And from the May 9, 2007 Record:
"Over the last few days, 25 of the 516 students on the waitlist have been offered spots with a target class size of 538. These students have a week to decide whether or not to join the 277 students matriculating via regular decision and the 215 admitted via early decision.
'It’s nice to be able to go to the waitlist,' director of admission Dick Nesbitt ’74 said. Filling the class is a bit of a science, as Nesbitt noted Yale had already gone to its waitlist and could cut into Williams’s yield. 'We have to have a little cushion. We’ll probably shoot for 545 [students] by the end of May because there’s always a bit of melt back,' Nesbitt said. Last year, 71 students were accepted off of the waiting list."

(Yale isn't mentioned in the WSJ article either.)

I believe it is comparable to the luck of the draw. I simply sent back my response card and was completely caught by surprise when I was offered admsission off of the waitlist. And I'm pretty sure it was niche filling that got me in.

Hey, Williams/Conn, who are you, so that they chose you? I mean, are you an athlet or a musician?

Guys, the best thing you can do now is to stop stressing about the waitlist and start getting excited about the school you're currently enrolled at. At this point, I don't think there's really a lot you can do. I committed to Duke originally, sent out my four waitlist letters and forgot about the schools afterwards--and it made the call from Williams on the fourth a very pleasant surprise. Don't get stressed out, and try to enjoy the rest of your senior year--what will happen, will happen.

Ksarfeks> I asked my admission officer whether they'll be taking people off the wait-list for enrolling in next year's class or not, and he said no. So that's not an option.

So second round is also over :(

---Btw, does Williams practice such a thing that they admit you from WL really late, but ask you to enroll next year?

Ksarfeks> I asked my admission officer whether they'll be taking people off the wait-list for enrolling in next year's class or not, and he said no. So that's not an option.---

Hey, Abhi - I think that is what thisismylife meant. It was not about waitlist and THIS year, but the NEXT year. So don't loose hope. (I hope I was correct about what thisismylife meant.)
