Waiting on admissions response...

Hey,

I was in contact with head of the department, who actively talked to me for a year before I applied. I notified her when I submitted, and she responded. This was In January. I wrote again once I started seeing SDSU acceptances rolling out on gradcafe, asking when we might hear about admissions. This was a week ago. I haven't received a response yet, and was wondering if it would be too pushy to send another. Just going crazy with 'what if' scenarios of application loss, etc. Does anyone know an approximate date when I should be concerned if I haven't heard back from the university?

Thanks

It depends on what you appled for (MS/PhD) and in what field. If a school has rolling admissions, then I wouldn’t worry perse, even for a graduate program. Most schools have a cut-off date for accepting offers (4/15), which is pretty standard; unless, they have rolling admissions, and you aren’t waiting on funding. I don’t know what happens after this date, maybe some people are called from the wait list, but I wouldn’t count on recieving any funding, espcially for a PhD program. If you have applied to a PhD program in most fields, then it most likely you are wait listed or rejected, and don’t know it yet. It’s kind of hard to assess your situation, because enough information wasn’t provided on the field, and program.

Perhaps she is waiting for your paperwork to go through Admissions.
Check your Spam folder to see if anything has come to you from Admissions.

OP - have you seen SDSU admissions from YOUR department or from others? Individual departments often operate on different schedules, so the fact that department X is sending out offers does not mean that department Y has done so. It is possible in this case that your department is still sorting out who to admit, and they will not appreciate being bothered.

That having been said, it is getting pretty late in the season for them to still be working this out - as another poster noted, 4/15 is the date when they expect admits to commit, and since it often takes several rounds of offers to fill all the spots they should really have gotten the first round out by now. It seems likely that they HAVE sent out the first round of offers (even if it did not show up on gradcafe) and are waiting for those commitments, and since you have not been notified (one way or the other) it is likely you are still in contention but were not a first choice.

Don’t take this personally, until they get all the applications in they really don’t know who they want - I had been in a similar situation with a professor at one school, who was communicating with me enthusiastically up until apps were in, and then never returned another email. He liked me, but during the applications process I was either down-selected by the department or else he just found someone he liked more!

So hopefully you have other admits in hand or on the way, and hopefully a slot will open for you at SDSU, but for now you have little recourse but to hang in there. You can try to contact them, but unless you have a good reason (like an offer in hand from another school that you want to accept/reject based on SDSU’s offer) I would not expect an answer.

BTW, it IS still possible to get an offer even past 4/15! Some admits will put off a final decision until the last minute, and by 4/15 many of the people they are sending offers to will already have committed somewhere. I have heard of the odd individual still getting offers in June! Funding is less likely in these circumstances, but still not impossible, as it largely depends on whether the original spot was funded (many funding options are tied to the specific position).

Good luck, and stay strong!

Thanks for all the responses. Yes, on Gradcafe it seems like only two departments have sent out results. My department is very small (only accepts 3 people a year, Jewelry and Metalsmithing), but the fine art department isn’t. No fine-arts decisions have been posted on grad cafe, so perhaps they are just slower than other schools. Will see! Thanks for the encouraging words, good luck to everyone.

Oh and I’m applying for a 3 year masters program. I’ve already been offered funding for another program, so its not the end of the world if I don’t get accepted… SDSU is just my first choice :D

I’m still waiting on 7 schools’ PhD program emails! I think my F5 key is going to break soon. When I emailed them they said they can’t say anything and that it’s still being worked on…

7?! Okay that’s a relief. I’m wondering if the California system is slower than the rest of the world too.

I’m still waiting on five, so you’re definitely not alone!
