Waiting - should I email POI and ask?

I've applied to several biomedical engineering programs in the US and have not yet got any result, but fortunately I've got an offer from a local uni. The deadline of acceptance for the local uni is the end of Feb. Actually I want to do my grad degree in the US more but I'm afraid that I won't get any offer from unis in the US. So should I email the prof in the unis that I've applied to and ask whether I'm in?

BTW does anyone in this forum know when usually does Dartmouth send out their offers?

I would not normally recommend contacting the department(s) this early, but you have one of the situations where an update is warranted. Definitely contact the department and possibly one or two professors, and just let them know that:

“Although you are my first choice I have received an offer with a foreign university that has an acceptance deadline at the end of February - if you could please let me know before that time if I will be able to attend your school I would appreciate it.”

Specify that it is a foreign school, since most US universities have signed onto an agreement not to put deadlines prior to April 15. Then, if you have not gotten a satisfactory answer by your other school’s deadline, contact your accepted school and ask for an extension - many US schools will give one.

Thanks comicfish, but juz one more doubt - will letting the prof know that I have offers from other schools give a bad impression?

Why would it? They assume that you applied to multiple schools (I guaranteed you that they did when they were students!), and they know that different schools offer acceptances at different times. Given that, why should they be upset that you also got accepted somewhere else? It does not in any way reflect poorly on you that you!
