Waiting Tables in New Haven: Bad Idea or Okay?

Hey everyone! I'm a member of the class of 2014, and I've been deciding lately what I'm going to do for extracurriculars next year. I definitely want to get a job. I was only considering on-campus jobs until recently, when I realized how much I'll miss waiting tables next year. I've waited tables throughout high school and really enjoy the people I've met and the interactions I've had. I might well make better money as a server than as an office assistant or other on-campus employee also. Does anyone have any experience working off-campus at Yale, especially in food service? Is it ill-advised to do so? If it isn't a bad idea, I'd be happy working in either an upscale restaurant (ideally) or a more casual place (where I have more experience) provided that it was near campus and the hours were reasonable. Can anyone suggest places I should look within a couple blocks of campus? I'd like to work at places frequented by Yale students and visitors to campus. If it is a bad idea, I'll stick to on-campus jobs. Thanks!

Minimum wage at Yale is $11.50…

I know. It’s great! But on a good day, you can make way more than $11.50/hour. Plus I like having cash on hand. Plus I love waiting tables in general and conversing with strangers. It’s an interesting job.

There are some very upscale restaurants not too far from campus – which I’m sure would be pleased to find qualified and motivated applicants. I’m sure entomom’s list will give you some good hints. BTW: you’re the type of person all of us notice when we frequent restaurants: someone who enjoys the work. It really makes a big difference.

Good luck to you and congrats on going to Y.
