Hi CollegeConfidential,

I'm helping my nephew apply to college (long story). MSU was one of his choices; he applied in the regular cycle.

I've just heard from him that MSU sent a letter asking to see his 2nd semester grades before making a decision. I'm confused. My memory of the admissions process is that a school could accept, reject, or waitlist you, but you couldn't be deferred unless you applied early.

I can see the logic in their wanting to wait for 2nd semester grades, but I'd love to know from someone familiar with this: will he really have to wait until June now to hear a final decision from MSU? How long do you think they'll take to reply? Is this something they commonly ask for these days, or is this something they're doing specially for my nephew? (He's a really, really desirable candidate for several nonacademic reasons, so that wouldn't surprise me.) Finally: what do you think his odds are, if he keeps up his grades? I think they're in the 3.3 range.

Thanks.
