I’m currently in New York and am going to attend York College until I earn my associates. I’ve enrolled for some classes, and the issue I’m facing right now is that my financial aid process hasn’t been completed yet (I’ve to submit my father’s 2014 tax return transcript before they could begin). I’m not sure when my tuition fees are due, but if my aid takes too long to arrive, would they accept it if I were to wait until December to pay?
You will have to ask your school. (Probably they won’t let you wait until December).
How much are the fees?
Can you pay for it with your summer job earnings?
When did your dad file his 2014 tax return?
When did he request the transcript?
You cannot attend class unless the bill is paid. Any anticipated credits; Pell/TAP will be credited to your bill. It seem that they are not going to approve your aid until you are verified.
If you applied for TAP, make sure that York is listed as your college so that if you are eligible for state aid.
Put in a request for the IRS transcript and update your fafsa using the IRSDaya retrieval tool. You can request the transcript on line and you should receive it I about 10 days. Since classes start and the bill is due to be paid in August, do it today.
Is York college the one in PA? Would NY TAP work for this school if it’s not in NY?
Is the school definitely affordable? If not I don’t think going to an out of state school just for two years (associate’s degrees) makes good sense since you will have to transfer somewhere else for the bachelor’s degree and freshmen usually get better aid than transfers. Did you apply to a school where you can go to for 4 years and it’s affordable?
Any in NY? If you plan on transferring would it make more sense to start at a NY school and then transfer?
Oh I see there is a York college in PA, Nebraska, NY
I assume you are talking about the one in NY.
Definitely contact the school and get the papers they need. Make sure you have accepted all aid.
Do you have an IRS office close to where you live? Someone posted here that they got the transcript right away. But your dad might have to go with you if it’s his tax transcript, then you could drop off the transcript in person at the school.
Thank you for the replies, everyone!
Yes, I am talking about the one in New York. My father said that he will be visiting the IRS office tomorrow to grab a copy of his transcript, and I will be handing it into York as soon as he does. Though, my tuition is due on August 5th, and my financial aid process is going to take about two to three weeks to get done. I will likely have to submit a few more documents somewhere down the line, but I’m not completely sure, and if I am required to, it might take even longer.
I’ll be contacting the school as early as I can to see if they could possibly extend my deadline, but I’m not sure how this will turn out. I haven’t saved enough money from my summer job, and for now, I’m trying to avoid loans, as there are already some loans I need to pay off.
If they’re unable to help further my due date at the end, is there something else I could do, or would you guys recommend me to skip this semester all-together and attend the next one (when, hopefully, my financial aid money will be ready)?
Definitely call the school and make sure you won’t be penalized if your aid won’t post in time.
I think loans and federal and possibly state grants show up in your account as “anticipated aid” because they can’t be disbursed until closer to start of classes.
But I’m new to this as well so make sure you understand your situation by talking to the FA office of your school.
On your bill it should say how much the costs are and how much aid if any is anticipated, of course if your aid wasn’t processed at all yet then it would be more difficult. Did they give you a number of how much you most likely have to pay after all aid?
Yes have your dad get that transcript and take it to them asap and maybe they can give you some more information.
You do have almost 2 weeks till the 5th so hopefully everything will be worked out by then.
Next year try to get FAFSA and taxes done asap. Then if there are questions there will be more time.
I don’t believe there’s any anticipated aid waiting for me right now, as my FASFA hasn’t been completed yet. If I do wind up attending this semester, and my financial aid process does not work out in time, I’m assuming that I’ll have to pay off all the costs by myself. I wish this weren’t the case, haha.
What is stopping you from completing your FAFSA? If you have a copy of your dad’s tax return, you can complete the FAFSA using the IRS data retrieval tool and submit. once you submit, you will see your EFC
After you submit, don’t forget to look for the orange arrow and complete the tap application at the same time. If you submit them today, you will have a SAR and a status of your Tap, by the end of this week/early next week
You have enough information to know whether or not you are going to get financial aid.
What is your FAFSA EFC?
once you know, click the 2015-2016 pell chart (look up your EFC to see how much if any Pell you are eligible to receive)
https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/financialaid/
Check your TAP status:
https://webapps.hesc.ny.gov/hescpub/main?target=renderer_tap_student_inq&select=1
click view/change your TAP information.
IF York college is not listed as your school, then change your school information
I’ve already applied for TAP when I had initially submitted my financial aid application, and looking at their website, it actually seems that I’m actually eligible for up to $2,500 (I don’t understand why none of this has shown up at my CUNYfirst page). If I’m eligible, how will I be able to receive any of it?
Also, there is another question I have in mind. Even though I don’t want to make any loans at the moment as I’ve previously said, let’s say that I do borrow some money from a family member to pay for the semester, and after a month or two, I eventually get a hold of my aid. Will they allow me to use FAFSA money to pay them back?
First…the FAFSA is a financial aid application form. FAFSA does not give out money. The data on it is used to determine your eligibility for federally funded need based aid. Some schools use this data for their institutional, aid as well.
You will on,y get money back from your college IF your aid exceeds the college’s billable costs. Your aid is disbursed to the college. The college takes what it needs to pay the costs for which they bill. If there is an overage, you can request a refund. You can use that overage refund for anything you choose.
I guess my question is…will you have an overage in aid? You will not receive need based aid in excess of the cost of attendance. That is not allowed.
At this point, your first and foremost goal is to get your aid application completed. get it done.
And next year…plan to get all of this done in February so you aren’t dealing with this…again.
Once again, when you looked at your TAP, did you make sure that you updated your TAP to make sure that CUNY York College is listed as your school? If you did not, then CUNY first and York will not have a record of you being eligible for tAP (keep in mind when you file the FAFSA TAP usually puts in the first NYS school).
If you are eligible for TAP, then you are eligible for PELL. Look at your SAR. You will need to print it out anyway to complete your admissions process (If your EFC is under $3000, then you will not have to pay the seat deposit). How much is your EFC from the FAFSA?
If you are only planning to stay there long enough to receive an associates, have you considered just paying the $65 and doing an on the spot admissions at one of the CUNY CC’s? This way if you apply and get accepted to ASAP, you would get free tuition, books and a metro card allowing you to go to CC for free.
@sybbie719 doesn’t this student need to complete his FAFSA…now…regardless of what you put in post 11?
Will he get any TAP or other NY aid without a fully completed FAFSA?
He would not have a tap award unless he completed the fafsa because that is where they pull the information from. I think that Op needs to do either the data retrieval or get a transcript. CUNY will not award any aid until you do this
So @Thousand858
You don’t have a TAP award on your financial aid page because your FAFSA is still not considered complete…because you have not provided the tax documentation either via DRT or tax transcript.
The college is a business. It is not their fault that you did not get this all done much much earlier. If your bill is due by August 5, you need to pay by August 5. You can contact the school, but until payment arrangements are made, no classes.
Having said that, does this college have a monthly payment plan? If so, look into that. There is a fee for signing up, but you would pay 1/10th (usually) of your YEARLY costs per month. Would this help you?
Of course the monthly plan is only good IF you are certain of your aid, and are certain that you will, get everything processed ASAP.
That is not true. If he checked HESC and they show he has a tap award the reason the York does not have it because he needs to log into HESC and assign York as the school that he is attending. Once he updates his HESC they will have the update in 4 days. He should take care if this today
If he did not file an initial fafsa he would not have been able to see his tap. If he is eligible for tap he is most likely going to receive pell. He is merely going through the verification process with CUNY
If push comes to shove, he should print out all of his stuff and take it along with his transcript and the financial aid office can help him
If you have an overage after your tuition and fees are paid the school will front you money for books.
What is your fafsa efc
Thanks, Sybbie.
It sounds like this student needs to contact the financial aid office at the college and find out exactly what is missing, etc.
Sounds like a great deal to go to Cuny CC for free. How much would be left to pay at York if you got TAP and Pell and can you afford to pay that by Aug 5?
I’ve logged into HESC and it seemed that York was already my assigned school. Also, my father has submitted his 2014 tax return transcript for me at the school financial office today while I was at work, and they told him that it would take four to six weeks to process (which isn’t going to help, as my bills are due on August 5th).
If I borrow some money off a family member of mine, would I, in any way, be able to pay them back at a future date with assistance from FAFSA? If so, do any of us know how I could go about doing it?
Once more…FAFSA doesn’t give you money.,it’s a financial aid application form that is used to determine your eligibility for federally funded need based aid, and in some cases state funded need based aid.
You will only get a refund from the school if the amount you receive is more than you owe them. If you borrow money and pay your bill in full, you should get a refund of the aid you receive for this term…because your bill will be $0.
However, there is NO WAY for anyone here to tell you if you will receive enough in need based aid to fully pay your bill anyway…which is what you would need to repay if you borrow.
