My daughter just received notification that she was waitlisted at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. I thought I would start a thread so we can all post our waitlist information and when (fingers crossed) the students come off the waitlist.
Does anyone know if there is anything that the student can do to help in the process other than sending first semester grades?
Her course load her senior year includes: AP Calculus, AP Environmental Studies, AP French 5 and Anatomy and Physiology.
Rank:103/508 (self reported as of 6/2016), may now be higher
She wrote all the optional essays.
WI Resident
ECs: Varsity swimming (4 years), competitive club swimming (state and sectionals qualifier), junior varsity track (2 years), Link Crew, DECA.
Since her application on 10/31, she qualified for the Wisconsin Girls State Division 1 Swim Meet (only top 24 girls in each event in the state qualify), she earned a 3.67 GPA her first semester senior year and she completed observation sessions with physical therapists from a local medical group. She does not want to swim in college.
I was somewhat surprised that she was waitlisted. I know her ACT is low but it is still in the range of the middle 50% accepted into CEHD last year. University of Minnesota is her #1 school and she’s been dreaming of being a Gopher for years.
send Mid-term grades and any additional achievements earned (for instance, your daughter’s swim qualifications). You want the application to be as strong as possible because they only choose the strongest off the waitlist.
@rbc1999 My WI daughter was also wait-listed on 1/30. She applied to CBS. She didn’t see any optional essays, so she didn’t do them. Maybe CBS doesn’t offer optional essays? She has a 4.0 and got a 29 ACT. @JBStillFlying I was wondering if sending mid-term grades would help, so thank you for commenting on that. She got a 4.0 again 1st semester of this year, w/ a 98 in Physics and a 97 in a UW Heredity class.
Waitlisted on 1/30; accepted on 2/10 (CLA)
26 ACT, 3.59 UW GPA
2 APs, 7 honors, 2 CIS

I wonder why I was admitted from the waitlisted so quickly. I was going to send in my 1st semester grades but I was accepted before I had the chance to.
@nics99 Congratulations! My daughter is still waiting to hear back.
She called the admissions counselor for CEHD last week to ask her what kind of information she would like to see and if she should provide another recommendation. The counselor wasn’t very encouraging. She told my daughter that being waitlisted was about the number of students who applied. They only advise she gave was that she should email her semester grades but another recommendation would not be helpful.
My son was waitlisted as well. He applied to the College of Engineering. I wish colleges would make kids accept or decline their offers. This would give the universities a more accurate picture of ho will be attending. I know of at least 3 kids that were admitted to Univ of Minn Engineering and not going. Most kids just “don’t accept” but don’t officially decline. This school is on the top of my son’t list. Is it worth calling the admissions counselor and telling them that he is still strongly interested?
My Son’s status on the tracker changed yesterday, was waitlisted previously on 1/30 - he applied to CSE and CLA (2nd choice) - he was accepted to CLA, yet to get the acceptance in mail. He was also accepted in Duluth and Iowa state for engineering, so need to weigh in pros and cons for CLA Vs Engineering at either Iowa state or Duluth !
I just found out there is a formal process to appeal a waitlist decision. You don’t have to appeal-they say you will automatically be reconsidered. But I thought I’d share this info. for anyone who’s intetested in appealing.
@rbc1999 Yes sir/ma’am I am also in the same situation. I received an update on my application and the admissions committee extended my wait-list to June 15th. Frankly speaking this is rather preposterous and extremely unprofessional because this keeps me on a hinge for up to another two months. UMN is my top choice but this inconsistency shown by them is starting to frustrate me
@Daz918@rbc1999
I am also on the extended waitlist, too… These are my stats:
1st choice CSE, 2nd choice CLA
ACT: 33C (35 Math)
GPA: 3.6 UW, 3.9 W
SAT subject test: 790 math
OOS from Colorado
I got re-waitlisted too. Annoying, because by the time I hear back, I would have waited 9 months for a decision. I could have gotten pregnant and had a kid in the time it took them to get back to me! Looks like I’m putting my deposit down on Miami in Ohio. Unbelievable!
