how did you get the email address?

I received a piece of paper in the mail that was folded (sounds weird, but that's how it was sent). It gave me the information to access it online.

Sounds good. Thanks, gcards.

I got the packet in the mail today telling me to send a deposit in by the end of the week (or is it two weeks... I forget) and it has housing and such...

I'm definately going ^ ^

I feel stupid for not getting off the waitlist at Duke, but, no matter what happens, I won't go to Duke.

Jvhowube the sad reality is the rep and resources matter a lot and Duke trumps Middlebury hands down. Do I think you will get a better education at Duke? Maybe but maybe not. I do think Duke is a much better door opener.

hairypotty: it is, in your case, most definitely the university's loss.

I have heard that Duke advising is AMAZING, and is a reasonwhy many students value a Duke education so much.

Lack of community? Whaaat? I was only there for ONE night and I felt like I was part of something amazing. Maybe someone who attends Duke can attest to this.

Also, the south didn't seem like an issues to me because Duke has a very small population from the carolinas-- 15%. I'm from california, which is the total opposite of the south. I definitely wasn't turned off by Duke at ALL.

I think Duke has a great community. You just have to go out and be a part of it. I had an absolute blast and met so many people. Your dorm will become your home, and you'll essentially live with your closest friends.

There were very few people who I met who were not able to make a niche in the Duke community. My roommate was one of them - I don't mean to scare anyone coming in, but I did not get paired well at all. Most of my dorm could attest to that as they did not care for my roommate either - ironically, he will likely never realize that. Even with that being said, I can honestly say though that Duke does do an excellent job of pairing roommates for the most part. I think there was probably only one or two other not-so-great roommate pairs. Even then, those pairs really didn't have it that bad.

Back to the community subject, even though my roommate was utterly awful, I absolutely refused to transfer because I did not want to leave my dorm as it was such a great community.

Duke advising - to me, it has thus far been alright. I can't say my advisor was amazing this past year, but he did his job. I didn't really have any issues that required his help though.

"The South" - I'm from the North, and I really didn't find the whole southern that bad. The student population is really from all over the globe so you won't feel that everyone is from the south by any means. You will, however, find the southern mentality among some people who work at Duke - cooks, housekeepers, etc. Generally, everyone is pretty friendly, but you do find that things just aren't done as quite as rushed or as quickly in the South. One thing that I really did not like, however, is that everything is fried in the south - even vegetables. This is particularly bad at the Marketplace - however, it's generally widespread. This drove me nuts, and hopefully, it won't be that way with ARAMARK gone, and the Marketplace under new management. Overall, though, the southern mentality isn't that bad and can even be refreshing sometimes after all of the busy activity in the North.

dukestudent2009 -- You mean you didn't absolutely LOVE the "Fried Bar"?! gag

Yeah, that was pretty gross. French Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Fried Okra, Fried Mushrooms...I'm pretty sure they were running so low on things left to fry, if the year had gone on much longer they would have started just frying cooking oil and serving that to us. Yuck. Thank God for no more ARAMARK/MP!

I'm still on the waitlist. Is this indicating that I'm rejected?

not necessarily, i was accepted off the wl and will most likely decline dukes offer, so you still have hope

pattycake: I don't think so. I think there are rounds, and a lot of kids were selected in the first round. You still have time until the end of July.

stargazer: Thanks. It was nice of you to say that.

i just got off the waitlist today! got a phone call during english class!
