Hi!

I'm a 9th grader from MA who applied for 10th grade at Choate, Andover, Exeter, and Hotchkiss.
I got into Choate, but got waitlisted to Andover and Hotchkiss.

Andover is my first choice because I would be a day student, but Choate is my second.

If I want to stay on Andover's wait list, would I not be allowed to accept Choate?

Please help!!

You can stay on Andover’s waitlist until April 10, then accept Choate if you don’t hear from Andover by then. People are often pulled off the waitlist just before the April 10 deadline. Be sure to let Andover know that they are your first choice.

You can accept Choate, but you’ll be forfeiting your deposit if you get off the wait list for Andover and decide to go there. We are in a similar situation, as our son got into other wonderful schools, but is on the wait list for his first choice.

Won’t Andover not let me know until after April 10th?

Go for the revisits, and Andover will probably let you know if there’s going to be any movement for the wait list.

They won’t send out a final “We’re not taking anyone else off the list letter” until after April 10. But something I didn’t realize last year is that people often get taken off waitlists before April 10–so it’s possible to not commit until you absolutely have to in hopes that Andover will say yes (I think you should let them know that you have an offer, by the way). This is not to say that people get taken off often…but when they do, more often than not it seems to be early, rather than late, at least on CC. Of course, you may go to revisit days and decide you want to commit after all. There’s something to be said for accepting the school that accepts you!

Alex–I don’t think a revisit is possible for a waitlisted candidate. A phone call would be a good idea though, after 3/15.

It depends on how many people reject their spot. remember 1 person rejecting their spot does NOT mean that a spot opens up. It is all about the yeild. If enough people reject their spot, waitlisters will get consideration. Shoot them an email and say how andover is your first choice. Also tell them how why you are interested in your school. be polite, sweet, and THANK THEM! However, since you applied as a day student, I’m not sure that you will get off the waitlist because I assume that the people who apply as day students want to stay home and only go to Andover so…Choate is a greatttttttttttttt school too, so it truly is win-win. go back on revisit day and see how you like choate!

I meant for Choate, but thanks for also reading my mind if a wait listed applicant could go on a revisit.

Choose the school that you feel more comfortable with.

Okay thanks guys. Do you recommend I e-mail my interviewer or should I just e-mail the school?

For the re-visit? Contact the school.

Remember to love the school that loves you-

Your interviewer I think.

Waiting lists don’t get revisits due to space. Andover sometimes sends updates throughout the summer.

But be warned, you have two choices:

pay a deposit to hold your space at Choate and attend

pay a deposit to hold your space at Choate and then lose it if Andover has an opening.

Nonrefundable deposits are 10% of tuition. That’s a big risk if cash is tight in the household.

PLEASE–The likelihood you will have a significantly different experience at Andover than Choate is tiny. Be smart and love the school that chose you and move on!! If ever a kid could deploy an old adage–it is you (have you seen some of the heartbreak on these threads)–COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS.

I’m currently attending Andover. feel free to ask me a question!
If you tell Choate that you will attend their school, you won’t be in the Andover’s wait list.

Yes- you can accept and stay on the waiting list. The chances of getting off of the waiting list is slim (not impossible! Just trying to be realistic)
Choate is an AMAZING school as well and you should be really proud to have been accepted.

As I was saying, you can accept Choate, and accept a spot on Andover’s waiting list. My cousin did that, and ended up getting off the WL but still accepting the school that first chose him. Best of luck (:
