Did anyone called MIT today to check if they are taking any waitlisted student?

/____\ I just decided to turn down Cornell for a full ride at Berkeley, but I still have the last tiny hope of getting into MIT. (my first choice) I hope so so so so so much that they will take me eventually. garrr...talking about frustration. Anybody has new info on waitlist?

No new info, but it is reasonably likely that they'll be using the waitlist.

I got this information from a source who claims that they got it from the admissions office. -- They overestimated their expected yield on purpose so that they definitely would get less students coming than a full class, so that they will definitely dip into the waitlist and more accurately fill their space in the class of '11.

Again, this information can't be entirely trusted, but it seems like a reasonable statement, so I personally believe it.

Best of luck!

Curious about this too... wonder how it went with Jones....

I doubt it really had any effect... but if it did, it would be good news for the wait-listed people.

yeah I don't think that will have any effect neither. Many people still don't know about this by the way, and I don't think Asian parents would care because it's M.I.T.

I still really want to go to MIT!! Accept me~~!!!

I've heard it is likely they'll use the waitlist, but also likely less people will be let in off it as last year (30).

I heard that because a higher percentage of admits showed up to CPW than in previous years, the wait list might be used very lightly if at all. But then again, that's pure speculation.

When do wait list decisions come out?

Last year, they were able to decide to take waitlisted people on May 9.

"I don't think Asian parents would care because it's M.I.T. " (Message #5)

The statement is too inclusve. I am Asian and have been deeply troubled with the event. When I first heard the news last Thursday, I actually thought about convincing my daughter not to enroll at MIT. Last few days, my friends all mentioned the news to me as if I had been the last one to learn of it. It's been embarrassing to say the least.

Having talked with my daughter, I realized that it would not be reasonable to make her change her commitment to MIT. She accepted the MIT admission because of 1) students, 2) CPW, and 3) academics. The top 2 reasons might have had something to do with Marilee's leadership btw. I now look at the event as an ironic note to a happy ending for my daughter's college application season. Life does have a way to keep you humbled.

And best of luck to those on the waitlist! I hope you get in, simply because you haven't wavered.

My friend got in. Waitlisted and found out a day or two ago? Not sure when, but he is now torn between Stanford and MIT

Wow the admissions must be buzzing now... Are you saying your friend got in yesterday, May 1?

I have no idea. I just know that he was waitlisted, and our school announces (well, they copy the acceptance letters, etc. and put it in our school bulletin) when students are accepted to universities. His other acceptances were mentioned a lot earlier, with everyone else's results. (They don't read it aloud, but those interested can read it). I read it this morning that he was accepted, confronted him, and he affirmed it.
So, I'm not sure of the date he got the news...or really anything else. I can ask, though.

That's odd.

I called the admissions office today and was told they were still tabulating results from responses from regular decisions, and did not know whether or not they would even be using the waitlist.

It seemed like something of a canned response, but still, I don't think they would tell people they were still going through data if they were done now.

He was probably deferred EA, then admitted RD. Hard for me to imagine the admissions started using waitlist end of April.

Ya, unless the yield was really low...

I doubt they started on the waitlist just yet. If last year gives an indication, we should know in about a week.

Optimization's information could flat out be wrong.

I'm not sure about the EA thing, but I did ask him, and he chose Stanford, so I guess it doesn't really matter. :] I don't think I would've chosen Stanford, lol.

So... waitlist.....

Where are you guys all planning to go currently? And will you definitely go to MIT if you get in?

mathwiz - is Olin a definite for you or are you waiting out MIT?
