Waitlist chances

I am currently on the waitlist for UMass Amherst. What are my chances for admission?

2011-12
C2: Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 1261
C2: Number of wait-listed students admitted: 125

2010-2011:
C2: Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 1308
C2: Number of wait-listed students admitted: 102

2009-2010:
C2: Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 214
C2: Number of wait-listed students admitted: 170

2008-2009:
C2: Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 113
C2: Number of wait-listed students admitted: 91

All these numbers are from the UMass Common Data Set:
[Common Data Set (CDS) | Office of Institutional Research UMass Amherst](http://www.umass.edu/oapa/publications/cds/)

What’s interesting is how many more kids are accepting spots on the wait list. I wonder how many of them are truly interested in attending.

Looks like a few years ago, the chances were around 80%, now around 10%. It’s a pretty dramatic change.

With the enormous increase in applications to state schools, particurlarly “flagship” schools, more and more students are either being rejected outright or waitlisted. You best look elsewhere because your chances, unfortunately, are very, very slim. If you have no other options, take a gap year and get a job or start a business and work it.

Try again next year after thoughtfully considering why you want to go to college in the first place.

Got a call yesterday! Now I have to re-think everything!

My boyfriend got a call yesterday but not excepted into engineering because it’s all filled up. What are the chances of him getting into it by the end of summer or end of first semester?

What time did you get calls? I’m not expecting a call, but if I do get one I might not be available to answer because I’m busy daily between seven (school) and seven (clubs etc)

Powpowman-I got the call around 2:30-right after school!!!

Darn it! Do you think they would leave me a message if I got in?

Pretty sure they are not going to deny you admission and just move to the next name on the list because you didn’t answer a phone call. You should also get an email or regular mail or something. Check your Spire account regularly.

They asked me if I was still interested in admission- when I said yes they said they would send me an acceptance letter and package in the mail. Spire account says “under review” again!!!

In off the waitlist!

congratulations!!! Did they happen to say how many they were taking from the waitlist? My son is hoping and praying that he will be as lucky as you!!

^ Sorry to say, no they didn’t. Basically all they said was when I respond they will send me an acceptance package.

Yesterday Umass accepted 4 off the waitlist at my son’s school. It looks like the calls are going out now.

squeegis-did they say if they got an email or call? My son is also waitlisted and wants to go there sooo badly----thanks for any info you can provide…this is such an anxious time!

@porcupine- if accepted, you will get a call and an email. They will leave you a message if you don’t answer the call

Two more students have been accepted off the waitlist at my DS school. If you are among the waitlisted students…hang in there.

thanks squeegis- it is so difficult to wait…do you know if those kids had communicated at all with umass saying that they were still interested? Just not sure what to do!

From the Herald today:

Well, UMass did take students from the wait list last year, according to the CDS.

But I find it interesting they are blaming the price for having to dip into the wait list, though.
