@lolonimous At certain hours everyday (I don’t remember the timings of each day), they switch off the server for maintenance. So it’s really no clue, has been happening since the time I first opened my portal.
You can go on operation of hours on top right I think and it tells you under students section which timings are maintenance hours. @lolonimous
Even though there isn’t any definite information this is somehow very reassuring and calming to hear from other people in the same situation. Applied early decision back in September of last year and I know there are others who have been in limbo for awhile as well, good luck to all. :-h
Has anyone received a decision yet???
I feel like the understanding of the waitlist here is quite skewed. Once you are on the waitlist, UMich doesn’t have any obligation to contact you again. They will only contact you if they take you off the waitlist. At least that is my understanding of how it works.
You’re probably right. That said, has anybody received good news?
Nope, even if you get rejected, they will contact you, but then again, they said, “by mid June”, so nothing can be said as of now.
They will give you a decision, they won’t leave you hanging, even if the decision is that you’re rejected.
But nope, as far as I know, UMich hasn’t accepted anyone yet from the waiting list. They are notorious for taking a long time to calculate their yield and decide how many students they need to enroll from the waiting list :))
They need to see who backs out of their commitment - “summer melt”.
@blazedragon If that is the case, my apologies, that’s been my experience with the waitlist at other schools when I was applying
@hailbate It’s totally alright, I guess it depends on the school on how they deal with the waiting list. I have received only two waitlist offers including UMich, and both do give responses, so that’s how I ended up believing that most colleges inform you about the decision.
Anyway, let’s hope UMich can decide quickly and give us those admissions that we’re waiting for xD xD
Does anyone know when they have released this information historically? Or does that not matter much due to varying statistics per year.
@asnell91 Because they are taking really long, it could imply that there aren’t many spaces left so they are trying to find the best candidates and are filtering through the waitlist really carefully.
@kk2508 Can’t really say though, as U Mich has always had a record of being really slow in offering wait listed candidates a place in their class. But then again, the yield is expected to be higher than normal this year, if we observe the trend seen in various other universities. Hope for the best though, and I hope we get to hear positive news soon.
@blazedragon What exactly is the correlation between a higher yield and the number of waitlist acceptances? It would be great if you could elaborate on that aspect!!
@lolonimous Well, yield refers to the percentage of students who enroll into a university, from those who were given an acceptance letter, including both EA and RD acceptances.
When many students who have been offered admission do not go to the university and enroll somewhere else, the yield drops, and if the drop is significant enough (it almost always is), some seats become vacant, and that is when the university refers to the waiting list, and offers some students admissions from the waiting list. Thus, lower the yield of a university, better is the chance to be taken off from the waitlist.
But given the fact that U Mich tries to admit more number of students than it has seats, so that a drop in yield wouldn’t affect it much, very few students are taken from the waiting list. Then again, we can’t lose hope as of yet, as the official statistics are not yet out (as far as I know ).
All the best to you, and I hope the explanation helped.
I think you will have to be patient for possibly up to 6 more weeks. The admissions office will tell you that students will hear between the middle and end of June. That is consistent with what they said when they gave students the option of accepting the waitlist. As to whether anyone has already been offered admission off the waitlist, the general admissions people are not aware of any, but they cannot say with 100% certainty. If you contact the admissions counselor assigned to your high school, you might get more color, but I wouldn’t count on it. As to all the comments about this year’s yield, how many spaces are or may become available, etc., I cannot imagine anyone outside the inner circle of admissions could possibly know the answer to those questions. It’s pure speculation at this point. The only things you can likely take to the bank are that you will have a definitive answer by the end of June and the odds of being offered admissions are not high.
@ynkeyfn That’s totally true, but most schools have the practice of admitting candidates off the waitlist in waves from around mid April to late June, with the date given at the place where we accept the waitlist offer as the last possible date to hear from them. But then again, as compared to other colleges, U Mich kinda slacks off, with its admissions from the waiting list normally not even considered until May. But yes, the odds aren’t high, as they select a lot of people during RD to prevent having to go to the waiting list, but this year, their admission rates have been lower than ever before, but at the same time, the yield is expected to be higher too, so that’s still going to be extremely difficult.
No one can tell what will happen at this point, but we all do hope that they can just be out with whatever decision they have for us as soon as possible. :)) :((
But yes, even talking to your regional counselor would be better than contacting the general admissions people. The counselors tend to have a better idea of how things might go, but there always is an uncertainty. Still, hoping for the best for all of us!
Who should I contact to send a letter of continued interest too?
Has anyone received a decision?? Last year, some people got acceptances on the 19th of May!!
@lolonimous Nope, nothing yet. At least, I haven’t found any activity from U Mich’s side. Will have to investigate further though. They are pretty tight lipped right now, but I guess we can always annoy the counselors a little bit.
