waitlist/defer?

does UMCP waitlist/defer priority applicants, even though the decisions are released pretty close to the regular decision applicants? when i read the thread for last year i didn't really see anything about deferrals so i'm just curious.

I have never seen anyone get “deferred” from the ED list. The results usually come out in 1 of 4 ways

 1. IN
 2. IN for Winter, waitlisted for Fall
 3. IN for Winter with the ability to utilize the Freshman First (I think that is the name)…in other words, in the Fall you will not get dorms and your classes cannot start until after 3 in the afternoon. Come Jan you slide right in and all of the credits are transferred too.
 4. HAVE A NICE LIFE AT A DIFFERENT SCHOOL.

There are more that get #3 than #2.

^ I think that is right, however, I was under the impression that you can only be accepted or denied for the fall term. You can also be denied in Fall, but accepted for Spring. Thus, you can utilize the Freshman First program.

but what are the advantages of that freshman first program? if you’re OOS, where are you supposed to stay? that sounds complicated.

Freshman Connection (the program where you would be admitted for Spring 2011 but not for Fall 2010), from what I understand, is offered to students who do not fully meet the criteria they are looking for for incoming students, but rather offers the student an opportunity to take classes at the university, to show in a way that you can handle classes at UMD.

If you get Freshman Connection as OOS, it’s not the university’s responsibility to give you housing for the fall (you wouldn’t be a full time student for Fall 2010). I’m not sure if it’s guaranteed, but it is possible to get Spring 2011 connection, once you are accepted as a full-time student. Usually, Freshman Connection students will either live at home (for IS, clearly), or in an off-campus apartment.

thanks, that’s really helpful. i never really understood the program.
