I was wait listed for a few selective schools on M10. Would it be a good idea to remain on the waitlist on all the schools to boost my chances of getting into at least one of them or to focus on one or two at this point?

I am willing to attend any of these schools I go to, although my first two choices are Exeter and Andover. What should I do?

Where u accepted anywhere? If so, pay the deposit and then hope that your wait list comes through. Your chances of getting off the wait list are 0.01% to none, unless the AOs tell you otherwise. Good luck.

It doesn’t hurt to stay on all the wait lists. Last year, Deerfield and St. Paul’s let us know on or very near April 10th that they would not be going to the wait list. We never heard a word from Hotchkiss.

Stay on ALL the lists - just as you noted, you have no way of knowing which school may go to their waitlists. In addition to filling out the official stay on the list email or card, write a hand-written card or personal email to your AO at each school where you are wait-listed thanking them for considering you and letting them know you are still interested in their school. Your parents should do the same. You can also wait a few days and then make a phone call instead if you prefer (They will be fielding so many calls this week that it is better to wait a few days imho).

Now is a good time to let your first choice school know that they are your first choice as well because they like to offer wait-list spots to kids that they know will attend. If anything noteworthy has happened since you applied - an award, a score increase, etc- you can include that info too, or send another email later on. If spaces are going to open up, it generally happens around the April 10 deadline.

Oh, no. I am so very sorry. I had all my fingers and toes crossed for you. I wish the parents on this board had a vote in the admission decisions. We all saw what a star you truly are and how brightly you shine. Please don’t let this dampen your sparkle.

my dd was accepted w/out FA to her first choice school. Oh BOY…so now we hope that the FA WL moves (which it probably won’t) before April 1st when her contract is due. If it doesn’t move…she will be ok with attending the one other school she got in to…better than public school (She did make it into LaGuardia HS: FAME school but doesn’t want to attend). WL limbo sucks

My child was blessed with a few choices last year and had to decline at three schools that offered FA and/or merit scholarships. We hope that resulted in three happy WL students.

Here’s hoping students with multiple choices have to decline at the school(s) of your choice this year.

Fingers will stay crossed for you on this board-- really some kids DO get in off the WL, some schools more than others, some years more than others. You’ve made a place in everyone’s heart, Stargirl. Let us know what happens.

Anyways, even though the waitlist is unpredictable and pretty hard to get off, is it a good idea to write a letter to each school (keep in mind I have 7 waitlists) expressing how much I want to go?

@stargirl: I’ve only posted twice since becoming a member but I have been rooting for you all along and wish you the best. Please don’t give up.

Waitlisted at Deefield, my top choice, any advice?? I really loved the school and i cried for like three hours when i found out i got wait listed. at least i wasn’t full on rejected though

Good luck to all of you facing waitlists. Expect the worst, hope for the best, and consider those many wonderful schools that still have openings/rolling admissions if you’re really committed to this experience.

@stargirl: I have to chime in here. As a boarding school adult with some past experience working admissions, while I’ve not seen your scores/grades/etc., I’ve been consistently impressed with your maturity and thoughtfulness on this board, and would have admitted you in a heartbeat based on that. Just remember that to some extent every admissions choice at every level is a roll of the dice, and, to mix a metaphor, it’s possible, if not probable, to get tails every time when you flip a coin 10 (or 20) times. That may well be what happened here. Best wishes for your waitlist success.
