waitlist email

did anybody get the email saying that they got the wailist postcard today? it says 'Are you still interested in attending Swarthmore? Please let me know what you are thinking.' how should i let them know? should i just send an email or something? thanks in advance

Just reply to the e-mail.

I got an e-mail that said they were glad that I HAD decided to stay on the waitlist and that they wanted to confirm I was still interested in going there. I thought it was kind of odd...

o actually mine said that too

They don't want to extend offers from the waitlist to people who wouldn't plan to accept. They assume that you mailed your waitlist postcard a month ago and are simply trying to ascertain who is still interested. For all they know, you got off Harvard's waitlist the day after you mailed the postcard!

At this point in the process, they are looking to call people up, offer an acceptance, and confirm an enrollment. Done. Move on to the next one. They probably aren't looking to offer spots to people who are going to say, "let me think about it, can I get back to you sometime in June?"

I wouldn't read anything into it beyond that. If you would still accept a spot at Swarthmore if they offered you one, e-mail them back and confirm your continued interest. If you are no longer interested, you could either e-mail them back and say so, or just ignore the request.

So you don't think it means your high on the list or they're particularly interested in you or anything? They send it to everyone?

Correct. I wouldn't read anything into it.

It seems just a little mean to send out an e-mail like that. It says they're really glad you decided to stay on and it addresses you by your name and what not. I'm sure they know how easy it is for people to get their hopes up at this stage. They know people were interested when they sent in their cards, so really I don't think this was necessary. I mean, the worse that could happen is they call someone and the person isn't interested so they call someone else. It would take a little more time and maybe affect their ratings, but I doubt they take many people from the waitlist anyway.

Jeehawn:

You won't get any argument from me. I think the large number of students all these schools place on the waitlist is wrong. No matter how many times I say, "you have to view the waitlist as a polite rejection", kids hold out hope.

As far as the e-mail, it's damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they don't contact the waitlistees, then everyone goes nuts waiting to hear something.

I too received a similar email about a week ago, and I replied expressing my true sentiments. I then received a phone call today from the admissions office letting me know that the admissions committee had reviewed my application and that I am admitted!

wow congradulations. i also got a random call yesterday and for a moment thought it might be swarthmore but it was from the army. i was like -_-. i guess i'm going to ucb... =(

j'aimeswat (great screen name!)-congrats on your acceptance!

Yeah, I replied to the e-mail and so far nothing... This is really driving me insane. Does anyone know if they will tell us if they figure out that there are no spots left? I really want to get in, but if it's already over I'd at least like to know.

we still have hope! if its done they probably would have sent an email saying we're rejected =(

good luck!

Hmmm, that would be a bummer. Good news from admissions at Swarthmore or the Army calling to see if you want to ship off to Iraq to dodge IEDs for the next four years....

Kinda puts all the 1st choice great college, 2nd choice great college, 3rd choice great college stuff into perspective, doesn't it?

My regional admissions person called me yesterday, I returned the call today, and I am IN!!!!!

What a thrill. I had been on four waitlists and got two turn down letters last week -waiting only for Swarthmore and Amherst to respond

After I had received the email last week, I wrote back and gave some current information and said that I would attend if invited.

Received an email yesterday that they had been trying to call me, I called back this am and they offered me a spot.

Hope there are more who make it.

Congrats, flakskid! I remember so clearly when the same event happened in my daughter's life. It was just this time of May, though several years ago. The happiest (unromantic) phone call she ever got in her life! Way to go!

Momofthree

After I replied to the original e-mail, they sent me another saying they would be sure to get in touch with me if they should move to the waitlist in the coming days. While, they definitely moved to the waitlist and I haven't heard anything. I kinda feel misled.

Wow, I have no acknoledgement that they ever got my postcard and no email as to it, either.

Bumma. =P
