Waitlist??? movement??

Someone posted today in another thread that they knew of someone who was admitted off the waitlist. Has anyone heard if there is any WL movement? The admissions blog (thank you for whoever posted the info from it!) indicated that they have received committed deposits from 1687 incoming freshmen which, even with some anticipated "summer melt" seems well in excess of what they would expect for an anticipated class of 1500-1550. This, combined with the housing crunch, seems to make it surprising that there'd be WL movement. Anyone heard of anyone getting in from the WL?

I wouldn’t put much stock in one posting. Whoever said someone told him that could easily have gotten it wrong. I agree that Tulane taking someone off the waitlist seems absurd based on TulaneJeff’s blog info plus the other info we saw just prior to that.

I had a backchannel chat with the poster and I do think its valid, though there seem to have been some circumstances that would explain it. Thats why I am wondering if anyone else has been admitted off the wait list.

What was the “other info” besides Tulane Jeff’s blog?

You!! Well, you quoting the Tulane e-mail from that Friday saying it was 1,634 at that time. That wouldn’t have counted anything they got on Friday and Saturday. So it was very consistent with TulaneJeff’s posting after the weekend. It will be interesting to see if Prez Cowen’s weekly missive tomorrow will talk about this.

BTW, speaking of Dr. Cowen he is receiving two honorary degrees this year. One is from his alma mater, the University of Connecticut and the other from Notre Dame. Big congrats to him!!

Oh! LOL! Didn’t realize you meant my initial post from the TU email. Oops–

I saw that about the honorary degrees. Thats wonderful. Also fun was watching Harry Connick Jr poke fun at Ellen DeGeneris on Idol last night. Two New Orleanians just teasing each other.

does anyone know of any movement yet?

Have not heard anything Rosie. It just does not seem likely this year, given the numbers.

I wouldn’t rule it out. There are a lot of other schools going to their waitlists. Tulane may be overcommitted right now but as school accept some of the kids that committed to Tulane, many will consider changing their commitment.

Right now the following schools have reportedly gone to their waitlists:
American University
Bard
Barnard
Bates
Brandeis
Brown
Bryn Mawr
Bucknell
California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo (only)
Carleton
Carnegie Mellon
Chicago
Columbia
College of Wm and Mary
Davidson
Dickinson
Drexel
Duke
Elon University
Emory
Franklin & Marshall College
Furman
Georgetown
Georgia Tech
Hamilton College
Hampshire College
Harvard College
Ithaca College
James Madison University
Johns Hopkins
Juilliard (violin specifically; not sure of other disciplines)
Lafayette College
Loyola Maryland
McGill
Middlebury College
MIT
Mount Holyoke Colege
Northeastern University
Princeton
Providence College
Rensselaer Polytechnic institute (RPI)
Rice
Smith College
St Lawrence University
Stanford
Syracuse
Texas A&M University
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
University of Connecticut
University of Delaware
University of Miami
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
University of Notre Dame
University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)
University of Richmond
University of Texas at Austin
University of Virginia (currently only for CLAS and SEAS)
Vanderbilt
Villanova
Wake Forest
Washington & Lee
Wesleyan
Williams College
Yale

All of these schools have a higher yield than Tulane. It is reasonable to expect that if some of the kids committed to Tulane are accepted off of one of these waitlists, they may withdraw their commitment to Tulane. If that happens 100 times, then Tulane will likely go to their waitlist. It is too hard to predict but you still have hope. Good luck and best wishes.

Miami in bold because it shares many applications with Tulane and admissions from their waitlist may impact Tulane more than any other single school.

Tulane is still working with a substantial number of students on our waitlist. There has been a very small number of case-by-case admits from the waitlist this year but we have not made any final plans yet for the remaining students on our waitlist. It appears unlikely that Tulane will be admitting too many more students from the waitlist, however we will know more for sure around June 1st.

Ah, that’s too bad. :(

Tulane was my dream school for an extremely long time, but after being placed on the WL, I decided to deposit elsewhere. I got so invested in pre-freshman plans that I would probably be crippled with emotional stress if Tulane decided to admit me. For that reason, I haven’t really followed up too much with my admissions counselor (who, by chance, posted above :p) and decided to leave it up to fate. Looks like I’ll definitely be staying at my deposit school, now though. Not as broken up about it as I thought I would be; it saves me the stress of a HUGE decision. But there’s still the thought in the very back of my head that I could transfer…

Best of luck to the rest of those who are still waiting!
