Waitlist Notifications

Yesterday we notified waitlisted students that we will not be able to offer additional places in the Class of 2016. Students received this as a notification in their UChicago Account; if you are a waitlisted student, you may log in to your account to view this update.

A very small number of students have been notified that, should they have interest in doing so, we may be able to offer a place in our Class of 2017 after taking a gap year. The majority of students for whom this is an option have been contacted by their regional counselor. We do not have the ability to take additional students for this program, so if you are interested but were not notified of this option, regretfully, we will not be able to offer you a place in that group.

We wish all waitlisted students the best of luck at your chosen school, and thank you for continuing your interest in UChicago.

If we have not received any updates, nor any other type of communication, what does this mean?

We are still rolling out some notifications and contacting students, both for students who were selected and students who were not selected. If you do not hear from us nor receive any notification in your account by Tuesday, please contact your regional counselor.

How many waitlisted candidates have been accepted?

Were there more accepted than the 15 mentioned in the papers?

Thank you for our quick response. Can these notifications occur today or tomorrow, or are they limited to the normal office hours of the admissions dept?

^Texas, I’m assuming it was just the 15 pre-May 1 waitlistees who got in- yield must have been unexpectedly high this year.

Counselors are making an effort to reach out to students for whom the deferred admission will be an option as soon as possible. However, it is unlikely that a student would be contacted over the weekend.

Thank you!

When will the yield rate be disclosed? Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Likely not until much later in the summer, as we will wait to account for our students who may choose to take a gap year (either as part of our gap year WL program or through their own decision) or attend other schools if admitted off of their waiting lists.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Does it signify anything if we still have not been notified of anything? How many students are in this position, and what is the appropriate course of action at this point?

Uchicago, will the fact that limited space is available for waitlistees affect transfer admissions?

u chicago. Regarding the offered gap year admission option…

 1. what is the maximum number of transferable credits a student may take during the gap year?
 2. when will the student know what sort of financial aid/merit scholarship they would be offered?

smccoz, if you were offered this option you should communicate with your regional counselor to address these questions.

MIT will not admit from its waitlist for 2016, it will have the highest ever yield, close to 70%. UChicago should have admitted 11-12% of total applications, not 13.2%.

Dear U Chicago Rep:

Can you do anything to verify your statements? I called the Admissions Dept. today on behalf of a nervous neighbor whose child was wait listed, and mentioned this site and its comments. The admissions rep told me it was not accurate that the wait list was closed, and indicated that the school was still calculating acceptances. This reply is inconsistent with your posts. Perhaps the office was intentionally misstating, but why, if they’ve authorized you to post here? Thank you.

If UChicago loses more students than expected to the other schools in the summer meltdown, then it is very possible to open the waitlist again. But this will not likely happen this year.

No intentional misstatements here-- students have been notified of their waitlist status at this point through an update to their UChicago Account. The vast majority of waitlisted students have been notified that we will not be able to take additional class members for the class of 2016. A small number of students have been offered the option to take a gap year and join us in the class of 2017-- this may have been the source of confusion during your call. If any individual student finds the information in their UChicago Account unclear or confusing, the student should contact their regional admissions counselor.

I have not received any additional communications in my UChicago account since March 23rd, and as far as I know I am still on the waiting list. Is there something missing here, or are other students still waiting?
