I recently found out that Marist College waitlisted me. I admit it's not my top choice. It wasn't even a school I cared much for. However, after receiving the letter, I feel hurt. I cannot help wondering what I did wrong. Was it my essay or my supplement? Or, maybe it was my academic record and SAT scores? I don't want to feel like this at all. I feel especially hurt, because being waitlisted is neither a yes or no. There is no actually decision. It's simply a maybe. I would probably feel better if they had just went ahead and rejected me. Plus, my friend was accepted. It makes me more crazy wondering what she did better.
Also, I checked the 2009 college report for my high school. I noticed that people with 4.0+ GPAs and high SAT scores were rejected. While some with 3.5 GPAs and lower SAT scores were accepted. This is only makes me wonder more.
I need some words of encouragement.

Sometimes colleges feel that applicants are overqualified and won’t end up picking them as a college if they accept them. I think that George Washington is infamous for this?? I might be wrong, but it is a school in DC. So don’t get down in the dumps!

When did you receive notification? I thought the results were being mailed on 4/1. Do not drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what the admission’s office is looking for. Focus on the schools where you were accepted.

It’s Tufts, that is famous for it.

^Yeah, it’s called Tuft’s Syndrome. They didn’t sense you would attend if accepted (and it seems they were right), so in an effort to up their yield, they didn’t pick someone they felt would just reject them in return.

Likely, you were waitlisted because they were waiting on a display of interest to accept you.

I got waitlisted to Marist as well… I’m so disappointed. It was my top choice school, and now I don’t really know what to do.

kris10nicole - when did you recieve the letter from Marist? My S ws deferred at EA and has not heard anything since.

OP- Schools USNWR rankings depend in part on how many people they make offers to matriculate. I think this may be called yield? You have stated that you weren’t that interested in this school, maybe that showed? But you are probably a strong candidate, so they waitlist you and if they made a mistake about your interest level, they will find out that you really care about the school if you initiate further contact…This is all just a guess on my part.

Oberlin—waitlisted

MaryAnn C - I got it yesterday in the mail. I was surprised, I didn’t think they were sending out the letters until the very end of the month.

kris10nicole - Yes, I thought April 1. But is seems everyone heard this week. Maybe my Son has not heard because he was deferred from EA. Or perhaps the denied letters have not gone out???
