Waitlist Predictions

Does anyone know if Wellesley's is going to take anyone off the waitlist? I called last week to ask, but my admissions officer (I'm from California) was out...I know that they said they won't start notifying people until the third week in May, but I'm really getting anxious.............

Don't know.
Two girls at my school decided to go somewhere else besides Wellesley, so it's just this other girl and me going this fall.
I know a few other people who applied to Wellesley and have chosen a different school. Maybe you'll get in!

Something like five girls at my school are going elsewhere--good luck!

also, could somebody clarify me on the waitlist process? If School X wants a freshmen class of 50 students, and expect 50% of their admittees to enroll, do they admit 100 and then waitlist some so that, if only 40 end up enrolling they can fill up the class...?

This is correct, as far as I understand the process. The college accepts more students than they plan to enroll, and then they hope that their calculations aren't off.

Women's college are still a "second choice" for many, with coed top schools being first choice--so waitlist chances may be relatively good.

Someone, somewhere, long ago posted waitlist numbers from the past decade or so. I can't find them on the Wellesley website, now, but the number of students admitted from the waitlist generally isn't very high. The Board of Admissions tends to do a good job of anticipating how many students will accept offers from other institutions. (I recall hearing, a few years ago, that the number of students who accepted was unusually high--not something they expected at all!)

it was probably was the class of '08 which has a hundred more ppl than the other classes

in all probablity it wouldn't be that class.
actually that class was probably the year they accepted zero people off the waitlist because if too many people accept admission they don't want anyone from the waitlist. the waitlist is only really utilized when more than enough people decline admission.

i am waiting too

Any one have any new info?

PS still waiting here

It seems the admissions office would be the best source of information as to whether there will be any waitlist movement. They should know by now if there are any openings that need to be filled.

agreed, the admissions office would be the best source, but we shouldn't ALL call -- somebody want to volunteer and report back?

I called this morning and they said that they're not sure if they're going to use the wait list at this point.

Thanks for taking initiative turnip!

turnip--are you going to Cal next year?

yeah, I am

Admissions are bizarre...I didn't get into Berkeley, but did get into Wellesley. Why do you want to go to Wellesley over Berkeley? (I live near Berkeley, and am taking summer session classes there--they're sort of complete opposites, no?)

Well, I really want to go to a small, liberal arts school and I want to go to school on the East Coast because I live near Berkeley too (in San Jose). They really are complete opposites and Wellesley's actually the one has what I want: small, discussion-based classes with a lot of attention from professors and a strong sense of community. You're really lucky to be going to Wellesley...I would give so much to be in your position right now. I hope you have a great time!

first of all, turnip, you sound like an awesome person, and if it turns out that Berkeley isn't your thing(and hey, it might be), I really really hope you transfer to Wellesley so that we can have you : )

The other thing is that there is definitely at least some waitlist movement--a friend from school today told me that she got off the waitlist, and that she is declining the offer to do ecology at UC Davis. So..maybe a glimmer of hope?

Thanks! That really brightened my day!
