When I applied to Syracuse, I applied to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. However, I also put down second and third choices (College of Arts and Sciences and School of Information Studies, respectively). If I got put on the waitlist for Newhouse, what does that mean about the other schools. Do I hear from them seperately? What's the deal?

as far as i know, no you don’t. when you apply to su, it doesnt’ matter with the 3 choices. 1 decision is made under 1 of those choices.

The reason I was wondering was because my letter said I had been put on the wait list for the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications specifically, not Syracuse University

yeah, because when you apply to syracuse you apply to one of the schools/dual majors.
you’re waitlisted for newhouse in syracuse.
hope that helps

maybe you can ask a more specific question…yes, you are waitlisted for Newhouse; just so you know, they traditionally have approx 33% yield for the people they admit; if that is lower this year (for whatever reason), they will go to the waitlist…you may want to call and find out how many have accepted waitlist, and how many were taken last year…

in the past couple of years, Syracuse has waitlisted to Newhouse, rather than accepting people into alternative choices…no idea why this decision was made on the part of admissions…I also have no idea how to approach this if Syracuse was your #1 school regardless of the division you were accepted into…still haven’t figured out why some people are given their 2nd or even third choices while others are waitlisted to their first choice…

Another parent posted that her daughter applied to Newhouse and was put into the VPA communications and rhetorial program instead, and that was not a second or even third choice of her daughter, so to try to figure out the formula behind how SU is making its decisions I think is fruitless…your best bet would be to do what Rodney said and call to see how many are on the waitlist and make the determination for yourself if its worth the wait and see game til May…
