I know Amherst waitlists about 1000 people every year, but how many get in off of that list? Any help would be appreciated!

Check out their common data sets https://www.amherst.edu/aboutamherst/glance/common_data_sets/2010. Waitlist info is in the section First-Time, First-Year (Freshman) Admission. How many people they take off the waitlist varies year to year. Last year it was 0.

Ten-year average is 21 kids/year. And only about 500 accept their spot, according to Amherst.

I’m dying to get off the wait list as well! Does anyone have tips that have helped them get taken off the list at Amherst or other top LACs?

Get in contact with the school. Try to get in contact with your regional admissions officer. Send a letter reminding them Amherst is your first choice and you’re dying to get in. See if you can schedule an interview. Send additional information (awards and stuff you’ve earned since you first submitted your application). Keep second semester grades up. Maybe even submit another recommendation.

This is what friends who’ve gotten off waitlists at top colleges did. There’s no guarantees, especially at a school like Amherst, but doing stuff along the lines of what I mentioned will certainly help.

Waitlist is 500 this year. Should give you a better shot.

How do you know only 500 were waitlisted?

^^^ Ok, thanks a lot! Looks like I definitely have some more admissions work to do then! Oh, the nostalgia :)

EDIT: @sara - Read the Amherst wait list FAQ

I was waitlisted. I removed myself as I got accepted into Dartmouth and I don’t want to be lol2greedy

From their wait list FAQ:
-
Q. How large is the wait list for the Class of 2015?

A. An estimated 500 people will choose to remain on the wait list.

^ This is a lot different from your previous assertion, which states that only 500 were waitlisted by Amherst. They ‘estimated’ that 500 people will choose to remain on the waitlist, which means there are probably over 1000 people that were offered spots. On the other hand, if there were really only 500 people that were offered spots, only about half of them will remain on the list and the competition would be much less fierce.

Also FYI, Amherst took 3 people off the waitlist last year, out of the 471 applicants that accepted a spot. So I’m not counting on this at all.

thanks for all the help everyone. if only 3 got in last year, then I’m definitely not getting my hopes up at all. everyone should make a deposit on another school because most likely you want get in off that list. even if it is 21, the average per year, that’s still really tough, around 4-5% chance.
