I was waitlisted at a school, but I want to wait a couple of days until I receive the decision from one of my other choices. I guess my question is this... does how quickly you send the waitlist request affect how high up on the waitlist you are? Thanks.

Not unless they say so.
And anyway, most schools don't rank their waitlists at all.

"And anywya, most schools don't rank their waitlists at all."

They said, "if you wish to be seriously considered for admission from the waitlist, please complete and returned the enclosed card ASAP." I'll only be waiting a couple of days, so I don't know if I should send it now or after I hear back from that other school.

What school are you waitlisted at? You'll get more informed replies by naming it.

I got waitlisted at Oberlin.

send the card in now. You can always get off the waitlist if you get into the other college.

Ya, send it, you have nothing to lose, and at least you'll be at peace these days.

Send it in right away; a waitlist position is not binding, so if they offer you acceptance you are not obligated to enroll. And if you get into some other school you prefer you can always write back and ask to be removed from the waitlist.

For your own peace of mind, though, you should find out how many kids were waitlisted and how many taken off the waitlist in recent years. At some colleges the waitlist is used as a buffer. Other schools, such as WUSTL, are well-known for waitlisting practically everyone the didn't accept because kids tend to view a waitlist as an "almost" accept rather than a rejection. This has the effect of not discouraging future applicants with stats similar to those rejected (er, waitlisted).

Thanks a lot for your thoughtful responses. And thanks for the link, mikemac. I ran out the door minutes ago to send the card.
