I have not received anything. My first guess for waiting list finalization is May 16. This should be enough time to have the acceptance info sent out and back to Penn before June. Students at CC forums such as Duke and Cornell have already received their info after last weeks phone calls. Then again, Penn's FAQ said the waiting list will be evaluated at the end of May. Although, since Penn has made phone calls perhaps there is a rush to get students off the list. This is all a big guess.

So how do I go about telling the school where I paid my deposit initially that I am not going to attend?

The truth.

I wasn't wondering about whether I should tell them the truth. I was asking about the procedures: e-mail, some form, call (eeek), etc.

It seems that a few got the acceptance packet right away and a few who got the call and are still waiting for it to come. I think it depends on when the call was received, what time of day ect, how busy the admissions office was ect.
If you got the call and did not get a packet, call your regional admission officer and ask if that mean an acceptance packet was coming and when it would be arriving. I am sure you will get it.

I THINK I got a call (or calls) from Penn today..I'm an international student and apparently, we got calls from the US in the morning and in the afternoon. My mom answered the phone and the calls are definetly from america (caller ID) and the speaker had an american accent so yeahh..
And the person asked for me and asked what time I wlll get home.
Now.. no one in the US knows me.. and the only colleges that would call me are either Penn or the college I'm enrolled in now..
So.. is that a possibilty? Could it have been Penn that called me? Or is it too late for them to be notifying people (ie. have they already notified people last week or something?).

hey ; NoFX where are you from ?
to others : from when exactly did penn start calling people ? anyone who got the call and / or package could you post your dates in which you got them
by the way how many of you are in for sure ?

NoFX, it def. sounds like it could be penn, why else would the college ur enrolled in call u?

neutralnuke: sorry about the last comment. Must have been too early for me to think. I would call.

051407, I'm from New Zealand..
I'm actually staying home today to receive the call..
Or would they not call me back because they have already rung twice?! Would they do that? Like, move on to a next person just because the applicant couldnt be contacted?
Should I call my regional coordinator and ask him of my waitlist status?

Do you not have an answering machine? Call your regional admission officer. Tell him or her that you received a call from the United States twice the other day when you were not home and that your mother thinks it came from Philadelphia. (Say this even if she did not say this. You dont want to say that you got a call from the US and that made you think it was from Penn). Tell the regional admission officer that you are hoping it was from Penn because if offered a spot that you would definitely accept the offer.

Hey guys I am on Upenn waitlist, got a phone call on May 9, I said yes I am ready to join if oferred. But have not heard from them since then. So it looks like they do not have enough spots to offer to all the waitlisted applicants they called. They definitely called a lot more people.

With 8,960 views, I would think that there would be more than the few of us who are talking about phone calls from Penn about the waiting list. Unless, there are those who wish to remain quiet or just don't deal with these forums. Penn does not have the time to re-review 900 waiting listees. I want to believe there is a waiting list ranking system that is used by Penn's admin. officers to save time. A phone call is a moment of hope. Hope will remain until I have reason to change my mind.

Hey guys I just rang my regional coordinator but I think his secretary got the phone or something..
I said, what is the waitlist situation for international students?
And she said, there are few places for the "small small small small percentage" of waitlisted students and that they would be contacted by phone. (duh).
And I said, I think I recieved calls frm the philadelphia area couple of days ago but I wasn't home to recieve it.. Would you be able to check my waitlist status?
And she said, if you are picked off the waitlist, you'll be contacted a multiple times.. and will be sent an EMAIL.

So...... an email.. has anyone here received an email?
I stayed home the WHOLE day yesterday and they didnt ring back :(:( I mean.. they've already called twice.. would they call again?

jguy2, where are you located? far from Penn or closeby? But yes, I suggest that you try calling again and just asking about the status of your application.
Crib631: Its cool. I thought your response was funny.

Hi neutralnuke, I hv already called Penn yesterday and they are not giving any update except for the fact that they have not finished the process. I am located in CA. Today's WS Jounal has published that Penn is taking only 25 from WL. They definitely hv a ranking of the WL and also they are probably picking those folks who they think will hv no Fin aid issues, I mean can pay it all pretty much without expecting any grants etc.

i don't think penn bases who they admit on that.. they're need blind and admissions and financial aid are completely separate. admissions makes its decisions and then sends the names of the candidates to financial services who then puts a packet together for you

Do you really believe this? I mean: They have plenty and those who they admit want to attend by all costs. They are willing to sacrifice nearly everything. I'm pretty sure that the fin aid package are far beneath the package you would receive during RD and they won't take the guys who have financial concerns and might drop an offer due to these.

They have a ranked waiting list - I believe I read that everyone is ranked with a 1 to 4, 1 being the best. You can move up the ladder by expressing interest but you won't make a 1 out of a four. With 25 students to be admitted, you better are in the 1-section ;)

If they are only taking 20-25 off the waitlist it means that they were pretty accurate about the yield (ie. the percent they offered admisison to that accepted the offer). There are always going to be waitlisted applicants who were stronger than those who were acceped. These might be those that Penn assumed based on grades, scores and compelling extra curriculars were going to get into Havard, Yale ect and were not accepted for that reason (otherwise if Penn accepted all of them their yield would be much lower). I believe that those who get off the waitlist at Penn when the list of those offered spots are so small fall in to three categories: 1) Extraordinary applicants who were waitlisted for the reasons I mentioned and who have developed a repour with their regional admission officer or did not develop this repour and impressed their regional admission officer, and when their regional admission officer heard that Penn was now their first choice wanted to rally for them 2) Those from under represented minorities where Penn underestimated who would accept 3) Athletes needed at the lats minuite, ie. the recruited goalee has an accident that prevents him or her from playing 4) Important development admitts who were overlooked in error but were unbelevably compelling but believed to be going to Harvard, Yale or Princeton. (Those development admits who arer not strong if waitlisted are probably taken if at all later in the summer)
