I am currently on the waitlist at the University of Virginia and besides getting solid grades for my final quarter I also have sent in two letters of interest from me, and I plan on having each of my teachers write letters of recommendation as well. Will all of this help? I just want them to know that I have done everything in my power to attract positive attention to my credentials and pure desire to attend. I hear so many different opinions because some people say nothing increases your chances, while others say letters absolutely help you. If anyone could shed some light on the issue that would be great.
Thank you,
John

You have done the right thing by showing interest and I would keep it up. If you ask UVA, they are required to give you information about how many people they put on the waitlist last year, and how many were eventually accepted. Any waitlist situation is a long shot. Some schools waitlist as many people as they accept. With competition the way it is, being waitlisted really means that you were as good as anybody that they accepted, but they just don't have room. If there are two identical applicants and they only have room for one of them, then it is easier for the adcom to say 'waitlist' instead of 'denied'.

Thank you guys for the info, I will continue to show interest with the hope that it works out. If anyone else has any advice, it would be appreciated.

Thank you,
John
