Why is it that on the schedule of classes sometimes there are one of two slots "available" while there are still people on the "waitlist"? For example, yesterday one of McKinley's Finite Math classes was "closed" with three people on the waitlist. Today it is no longer closed and shows one spot available but still 3 on the waitlist. Doesn't seem to make sense, but I'm sure there's an explanation...

They seem to be holding them for interest groups. My son was #15 on one waitlist and #3 on another and I just checked today and he got into both classes so now we are going to have to drop one. Perhaps like airline seats they change daily as students drop classes?

As ebay said in some classes a certain number of slots are held open for a particular group. I noticed when D registered that a number of classes indicated that so many spots would be held open for university division or transfer students or whatever. Perhaps after the first couple of days of class it will reopen to anyone?

You can try emailing the teacher/an advisor about the class, saying you really want to be in the class and noticed they are reserving a couple spots. They usually have the power to put you in. It worked for me.

Thanks for the tip maxellis. I’m sure it will come in handy over the four years to come.

Also, like I said in another post, if you really want in the class and aren’t once classes start, go to the class and talk in person to the professor expressing your interest. Attending the class and completing assignments go a really long way. Doing those things will almost always get you a spot in the class, if the professor won’t give you one only by email.

She’s trying to get McKinley for Finite Math instead of the professor she’s currently registered for who didn’t get great ratemyprofessor.com reviews. We know from CC that McKinley is excellent but his classes were already full when she went to orientation. She’s first on the waiting list so hopefully she’ll get in before classes start. Thanks for the advice.
