I was waitlisted and I got a couple of quick questions...

Is demonstrated interest a big deal when it comes to getting off of the waitlist? Other than introducing myself to my regional counselor earlier this month and saying that I would probably go to Vandy if accepted (it confirmed that my email was sent but my regional counselor didn't respond), I didn't really do anything else to show my interest. The thing is, I don't really have any significant new info to report (awards, updates, etc), and I don't like the idea of making admissions busier than they really are by sending in some gimmicky crap to show "interest."

I'm thinking of writing a quick and to-the-point letter regarding my interest in Vandy and what I can contribute to the community. Do you guys think it's too late? The reason I procrastinated so badly with this is that I'm pretty excited for the school I enrolled for (CMU), but I got no aid and now that I think of it, Vandy seems more fun, plus I might get some aid as well.

Does it help if my HS has a good record with Vandy? Usually a lot of kids get accepted every year (10 kids out of 17 applicants were accepted last year), and 3 people have successfully gotten off of the waitlist in the past. Only 1 person was rejected from the waitlist in total, and he/she had really low stats like 1900 SAT and a sub-3.4 GPA.

Thanks!

The information here is particularly helpful. It should answer any questions you have about the waitlist!

you probably should do this if they don’t accept letters of appeal or something.

I declined my acceptance to vandy&&cmu. i don’t know what you’re majoring in but CMU is excellent in every major. i spent 6 weeks on campus last year&& it’s no reason ot be worried about fun at CMU. i love CMU&&pittsburgh. there is so much to do w/oakland down the street and squirrel hill. people say that students at CMU are nerds and dont party but they’re not. plus upitt is less than 5 blocks away (party central). so look at your choices. if it’s about $$, the wait. but if it’s about fun, then you are already enrolled at a very fun&&academically superior school.

it probably does help. my school has a really good relationship with notre dame&&it helped 3 ppl get admitted even when 2012 was the hardest year for admissions.

pm me if you have q’s!

My daughter was just accepted off the waitlist today. She did respond immediately every time she received an email asking if she was still interested in staying on the waitlist.

Her school’s Director of College Counseling had called Vandy and spoken with the Admissions Counselor for our area back when she was originally waitlisted, and we were told that responding promptly was important. The Admissions counselor advised us NOT to write a letter UNLESS we had significant updates – new test scores, new AP scores (which, of course, we don’t have yet), new awards, etc… if there was nothing new and/or significant to add, she said a letter or email would NOT help.

Not sure if a “good” record with the school has anything to do with it. Our school is young and we’ve only had four students accepted in the past seven years, (not including my daughter), one of whom was accepted off the wait-list last year. Two (including last year’s wait-listee) attended.

stats: 3.85 GPA unweighted, 33 ACT, Captain of Drill Team, Assistant Captain Dance Team, musical theatre, President’s Service Award, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, National French Honors Society, community service working with special needs kids past two summers.

@cksmum,which school did your daughter apply? Engineering or AS? I am really anxious now. It seems that all students get off wait list are AS students.
