Waitlist / Rejection Vent

hazelorb- it is really rude of you to assume that the people getting into UVA from western VA got 500s on sections of their SATs. If you haven't studied college admissions before, maybe you would learn that not everything is about the SAT. I'm sure the school makes exceptions for many students with below stellar SAT scores from all over the state of VA, not just the western part of VA. So, think before you start stereotyping a certain part of the state.

Seriously. This is why you have people failing astr121 (actually, our last test average was a D, and this is the class where the professor spent 20 minutes explaining the axes of an ellipse) when any of these ppl waitlisted or rejected would be acing it.

Lol, that's hilarious!

BTW, at least you people got waitlisted. I didn't fare so well.
[either way, I was going to go to NYU anyway]

really want to vent about a waitlist?? join the facebook group

i'm not assuming. every friend i have here from non-northern va has at least one section of their sat in the 500s. its just how it is. i am sure some ppl dont but if you could get the #s you would see what i mean. uva admits ppl based on county so its how it goes.

I find that hard to believe...someone with a 500 would seemingly need some special circumstances to get in. There ARE other schools in VA. Does UVA have to admit people from all counties or something?

We attended an admissions presentation in August, and a parent asked if UVA admits ISS according to counties/region. The answer was "no." According to the rep, UVA considers each applicant "holistically." This issue of a quota for every VA hs/county has been floating around for awhile. (What really happens behind closed doors, I don't know.) However, all colleges look to build a diverse freshman class.
For those of you on the waitlist: remember that many students who are accepted choose to go elsewhere. So, you do stand a chance. Be sure to indicate to the school that you'll absolutely attend if accepted. In the meantime, have a backup plan. There are many fine schools out there - and you might even be surprised and get a scholarship to someplace else.

Wow.....this thread makes one think IS UVA filled with elitist snobs? There are many fine schools in the Commonwealth other than Northern VA. And guess what, even in some of the more poor school districts in the state, there are some over achievers that despite their economical situation, have managed to thrive, pull the GPA, and to verify it's real, have the SAT's and the AP scores to prove they are capable.

Theflash-- we share almost the same schedule and yours sound impressive. I believe that everything happens for a reason. I hope you see it the same way too.

"Holistically", I think the rep meant that admissions look at all kinds of factors which INCLUDE geographic location. When the proportion of in-state vs. out-of-state applicants are maintained from year to year, there's no question about that. So that's to say that an applicant from New Mexico as opposed to NJ would stand a better shot at getting in. What bothers me is that the out-of-state students have a harder time trying to get into UVA since state law requires a certain amount of VA students at UVA. The standard is therefore not that 'holistic', considering in-state and out-of-state students are separated, and then considered individually.

If students weren't admitted by county then UVA would be 2/3 Nothern Virginia and 1/3 OOS.

Hazelord: hahaha while that's an over-exaggeration, it's almost true. I told my mom recently that I am so glad I live in FairfaxCounty because it's hard to say that we don't have an upper hand in college/life .

For the IS/OOS issue: every VA school has a quota, and the only reason people put up such a fuss about UVA is because of its prestige. UVA is a public school, and will continue to be so. The General Assembly wants to satisfy its taxpayers, and thus UVA must satisfy the GA. Yes, it sucks for OOS students. But they have a state school that they can get into with lower standards as well. Why should VA taxpayers/students be penalized?

wow hazelorb, your pretentious comments never seem to cease. I guess the only smart people in the state of Virginia really are the ones from northern Virginia. hmm, that makes sense now. I guess all the students that go to UVA that are not from northern Virginia fail out of the school because they don't belong there because they are all stupid. Right.... It's sad that you are contributing to the snobbish UVA student stereotype. You really are making us look bad.

Cakeremix: oh comeon, it was a joke. That wouldn't be true, and we all know that. But if you look at admissions for first years, a quarter came from Fairfax County, another 15% came from other NoVa counties. Overall, out of 9,000 undergrads, 2400 come from FFX. Thats 27% of the student body. Another ~1000 come from other NoVa counties, which is another 11%. So, of the entire student body, ~38% is from NoVa. Numbers prove a majority of IS students are from NoVa. Overall, NoVa students have higher numbers just because they have more opporunities/resources (AP classes, SATs, ect)
But hazelorb didn't mean that seriously. Virginia has plenty of amazing students, and the numbers prove it.
Another thing to think about: FFX county has over one million residents. VA has ~7.5 million. So, by population, it is evident FFX will send more students than other counties just by population ratios.

Food for thought: more OOS students we're admitted than IS. Yes, it's percentage is definently smaller, but its obvious that they see the need for OOS students.

omg, 4000 on the waitlist? that is ridiculous....

It's amusing to watch the various schools each put their own spin on a near universal increase in applications. Check out the article on the WSJ website for today.

hazel: I am sorry that western VA folk like me are ruining y'alls school. We just plain dumb down here. I guess its the water.

wow ppl take things too seriously on this board... should i preface things with extreme sarcasm from now on?

Now I have to keep all A's for the rest of the year just so I can have my 0-5%(probably) chance of getting in to UVA in JUNE.

I just wanted to know for sure where I was going to school...I am so sick of waiting.

Welcome to the life of transfers.
