Ummmm, I was looking at the USNA calendar for July to try to figure out my son's training schedule this year and I came across this very interesting tidbit...

Look at July 9.

Now isn't THAT interesting?

Anxious Mom, your son will have an excellent chance reapplying from The Citadel. Here's hoping that he and Spider finish their prep years and join each other in 2011!

Understatement of the week.

I wonder how THAT works?

From my "limited" understanding, it is the PLC- Platoon Leaders Course (Class) that makes is different from the usual DEP. He would graduate early, since our schools don't get out until June 22) go to boot camp, then report to the Citadel when boot camp is over. He would go to reserves once a month for PLC, then go to SOI or MCT next summer and OCS the next two summers (I hope those are the right letters I have trouble keeping them straight!!!) They said that he would not be deployed even if his unit were deployed as long as he was in college because he would have not been trained and would do more harm than good.
There are still a lot of things that need to fall into place for this to work.
They have to find him an MOS in SC. All of this would be easier if he stayed in WA, but he has decided to accept a full academic scholarhsip to The Citadel turning down acceptance offers from VMI, George Washington University and U. of WA.
I am still an "anxious" mom as we wait to see how it all falls into place.
He may choose to reapply to USNA next year.
We have learned so much for this forum. It has been addicting!

If he's got a full academic scholarship to the Citadel, why would he sign enlisted papers also? I'm confused.

About the 9 July thing: That really is interesting. Possible reason(?): I have a friend who went through Navy boot in January and who is currently in A-school on his way to Nuke school. He is hopeful about attending the Academy this year (with his CO's approval), and I have even spoken with him and he sounds confident that he has a chance to still receive an enlisted appointment. His school doesn't finish until early July, so 9 July could be a reporting day for sailors/Marines coming from any of the various Navy schools. Just a possibility...I could be way off...any other ideas?

Nice "catch" momof1. Sounds logical fiterace87. This may also be the time frame for filling last minute dropouts from I-Day and first days of Plebe Summer (or any combination there of).

alright so the academy does have a wait list and I am officially a name on that list. They begin making decisions in mid-May through mid-June. Let the waiting continue..

You just keep hanging on WP2010. It ain't over till its over. Just think back to months ago when the waiting was eternal. It won't be long now. We'll wait with you! Fingers crossed!

The first parargraph of this article says that PLC is an alternative to NROTC. At The Citadel, the kids have to choose a branch of ROTC that they want to go in to so he'll already be in Reserve Officer Training when he attends there. The Marine Option is there in NROTC so I'm just wondering what the PLC program offers that the Marine Option NROTC doesn't? Does anyone know? I'm just at a loss on why they would offer this program to a full-ride Knob?

Anxious mom, is he going on ROTC scholarship or The Citadel's scholarships?

He has a Citadel Scholars Award. Full academic scholarship with no ROTC connection or obligation. The Citadel does require ROTC classes of all cadets, it is a part fo the curriculum. The classes do not obligate one to military service. You must be a "contract" ROTC student for that. Dan's goal to serve takes over from there. The PLC option wasn't offered by the Citadel, he sought it out. His goal is to become an Officer of Marines. PLC moves him to that goal in the most efficient manner possible. He will be on a split ticket Marine Corp Reserves/PLC. Basic training is for the reserve obligation. It is split into two sections with 13 week basic this summer and SOI next summer along with first half OCS at Quantico. Yes, he will be a MOS 0311 Marine but deployment is not possible since training is not complete until commissioning (PLC). No worries about deployment (this is the Marines after all), just the timing to keep the college program on track.

Ohhhh. Makes sense now. You're right there, in that you can graduate the Citadel doing ROTC but not obligated to serve. So if his goal is to serve, WOW, he's chosen well. I know a few kids at USMMA that have done part of the Quantico training. They think alot of it, as they should. Your kid is gonna come back with a neck as thick as a two story building from all this training! LOL How proud you must be of him! I'm excited for you! Wish I lived a few hours closer, I'd be his sponsor Mom. But you tell him that I still live close enough to keep an eye out! ;) We go to Charleston alot so maybe I can sneak him out from time to time & take him to wild wings for lunch & I can snag you some photos. We gotta keep in touch!

well the waiting is finally over. after being placed on the USNA waiting list, I have been offered an appointment for 2010!

Congratulations!! That's awesome! It must have been torture to wait so long to hear anything!

Now...we're gonna have to do something about your name....

Congrats! Now what shall we call you? Waitee? Nah, hmmm Ill have to think about this more.

wp2010 Yipee!!!!!!Where in So.CA are you from???

Thanks everyone! Yes, Dmeix, i should look into changing my username.. perhaps something more original next time.
