There are already a lot of waitlist-related discussions on CC, and many dedicated college forums have a thread specifically about this year's waitlist outcomes at that particular school.

But I would like to take a very general (and highly informal) survey of ALL waitlist results to date. So I hope that CC members will indulge me and answer the waitlist-results questions that follow:

**1. Have you (or anyone in your orbit ... child, classmate, friend, advisee, etc.) been accepted off of a waitlist this year?

If so, where?

3.When did the college notify you (or the waitlisted student) of the good news?

How did the college do this (phone call, email, etc.)?

Did the college impose a response deadline (e.g., "You must tell us in a week" or "You must tell us before you hang up the phone!" )?

Did you (or the waitlisted student in question) accept the offer?

What, if anything, did you (or the waitlisted student) do to lobby the college for acceptance after receiving the initial WL verdict?**

My daughter was admitted to NYU from the waitlist. She received an email on May 6th asking if she was still interested in the school and whether she would enroll if she were offered adequate financial aid. She responded that she was still interested and received another email on May 9th offering admission, which she accepted. She was given two weeks from the date of the email to respond.

The Notre Dame forum confirmed that no one will be taken off the waitlist this year. However, apparently 20 or so applicants were offered the opportunity to enroll in a neighboring college for their freshman year with guaranteed transfer admission contingent on maintaining a minimum GPA.

My son and his high school classmate were both admitted to UCLA off of the waitlist on May 3rd. They were sent an email telling them to check the admission portal. They were given 4 days to reply. For different reasons, after a lot of thought, both ended up NOT accepting the offer. When asked if he wanted to join the waitlist they asked if there was any additional information. He listed his Fall semester grades (which are not taken into consideration at the UC’s) which were excellent (all A’s including 5 APs) and updated them on what he had been doing senior year (he joined a few clubs, got certified as a level 1 sailing instructor, etc…)

My daughter was accepted off the waitlist at Colorado College on May 19th, but for starting in January (2nd semester). She was given “72 hours” to decide. There was a glitch getting into their FA web site and by the time we saw the actual offer, she had one day to decide. She stayed with her original choice (Whitman) as she much preferred to start in September, the FA was significantly better and it is just as good a school (as far as we can tell).

On the Tulane University CC forum I have heard of a number of waitlisted students that have recently been admitted. Tulane accepted less applicants this year than previously to restrict the size of their freshman class, but evidently underestimated the number and needed to take folks off the waitlist to fill their freshman class.

I was placed on Hamilton College’s waiting list and have yet to be hear whether or not I’ve been accepted. I sent them a letter stating my continued interest in their college, some significant achievements since I applied, and why Hamilton still remains my number one choice. I also sent them some parts from a project that I headed up in our local community and am currently in the process of editing a video to send to them. I also called them, but that was just to ask some questions about the waiting list since obviously I’ve never been through this process before.Chances are I won’t be accepted since they’ve said they don’t anticipate taking anyone off the waitlist, although they haven’t closed the waitlist yet.

Although other colleges may offer a January start to students not admitted for September, not all schools are as open and clear about it as Hamilton is. (Colorado College, mentioned above by tleibman, is another place that is very direct about welcoming what they call “Winter Start” students).

So obviously you have not been admitted to Hamilton for either the first or second semester. However, if it is clearly your #1 choice and if you would be willing to begin in January rather than in the fall, I suggest that you contact your regional rep and say this. Even if Hamilton doesn’t plan to take anyone off of the waitlist for fall, they might entertain the idea of taking you off the list if you’re willing to begin in January. It’s a long-shot but worth a call to your local rep.

Sally, thanks. I do know about the January admission at Hamilton. While I would certainly be willing to do it, I didn’t suggest it to my admissions counselor because I know they only admit a small handful of students as Jan admits and the chance of me being admitted as a Jan would be about the same as me admitted for the fall semester. However, if I don’t hear anything from them in the next couple of weeks I probably will tell my admissions counselor I’d be willing to begin in January (after discussing this with my parents, of course).

I got waitlisted at McGill Life Sciences(biological sciences) May 1st, and got in today. I have a deadline of June 12th, and hopefully want to go.

If you and your parents are on board with a possible January start, I recommend acting now and not waiting a couple of weeks to tell your regional rep. Also keep in mind that if you do get admitted for a January start, you can also ask to be bumped to September, should there be a last-minute opening.

I was admitted off the waitlist at Duke University this year. The admissions representative called my cell phone directly and let me know the good news and let me know that I had a week from the following Monday to respond. (She called on a Saturday.) I updated my file with a video explaining why I’d be good for Duke, a podcast I made last year as a sample of my work, and a scholarship. I accepted the offer and am really excited!

I had two friends accepted off one waitlist each. One got admitted into Duke April 30th via phone and had a week to respond. He’s planning on attending. The other got admitted into Yale two weeks ago. He wasn’t sure where to go and I don’t know what he ultimately chose, but it was between Yale and Penn.

Sally,
i had an advisee get off the wait list into Columbia U. (The College, not SEAS). He received a phone call on May 14th, I believe, and was given until midnight on Monday, May 20th to respond. He did not accept the offer.

Following the initial wait list offer, the student sent a letter to the Admissions Committee. The guidance department discouraged him from going to a professor’s office hours  or from contacting his alumni interviewer.

The fall class at Brown is oversubscribed by 70 students because the yield rose by 3%. My understanding is that the handful of offers that were made are z-list offers: gap year and admission for fall 2014. Also, the wait-list has been closed and all people on the list have been notified by snail-mail (some letters may still be in transit).

I was waitlisted at Cornell, but I haven’t heard back from them. I’ve pretty much reconciled myself with the fact that they’re most likely not accepting any more students. I know at some were accepted into Cornell engineering off the waitlist, though. Since the waiting list is college-wise, maybe engineering was the only one which tapped into the waitlist.

Oh, and I was also waitlisted at SUNY-ESF, but I didn’t bother filling out the reply form, as it was my safety, and I wasn’t too keen on it anyway.
