WAITLIST SCHOOLS?

What schools tell you if you are rejected but on the waitlist? Do all tell you? Can some still accept you after rejecting you at first without a waitlist??? Thanks!

I do not think schools have to tell you if you are on the wait list and do not get in, they just say you will hear by a set date, usually June 1. if a school rejects you , I think you are out of luck with that school for that year. Not ever person gets waitlisted from either EA, ED or RD.

Two years ago, Ball State waitlisted my older daughter. She was notified in an email, and it was the first she heard from them after her audition (and it came in late March). I think that’s the norm for most schools (although nothing is cookie cutter with this process) - generally, if you are waitlisted, you’ll get an email stating that, and that will be around the time others get a firm yes or no within that school’s timetable.

Some schools do send out firm yes and no replies quickly, and if you don’t hear from them, it usually means you’re still under consideration. That’s not a waitlist, but it’s a no news is good news sort of thing. But if you are put on an actual, official waitlist - waiting for people to turn down a yes - you’ll know it, and you can wait into April and May (and I’ve heard beyond) to find out if you will be accepted to that BFA program.

You definitely won’t get an acceptance if they gave you a rejection. If they send you a rejection, you are not on the waitlist. They will either tell you that you are on the waitlist, or not tell you anything until they either send you an acceptance or a rejection. But once you receive a rejection notice, you are out.

@mtAllDayEveryday, I agree with @NeensMom. My D has received both rejections and a waitlist. The waitlist email was very clear that there was still a chance. The rejection was also very clear that the process had come to an end. As hard as it is, take a day and mourn the loss, and then move on. There is a school out there that is the right fit.

If the University of the West Indies had an MT program it would be my fit for sure.

DS was waitlisted at four schools last year. Three of them asked him to confirm whether he wanted to stay on the wait list. Two he declined. One continuously followed up every few weeks asking if he wanted to remain on the waitlist. There was no ambiguity or lack of communication from any of the programs.

Here is my observation so far on waitlist. I am of the opinion that there will be a ton of movement from waitlisted kids. The yields that the college hope for are going to be way off. Here is what I am basing this on. My S participated in Moonifieds in November. While he was there he made friends with a large group of kids. These kids auditioned for a LOT of schools at Moonified, in fact my S was on the low side at 17 schools. A LOT of acceptances from the same schools have been given to this same group. These kids can only accept ONE offer, so this will make for a lot of movement on waitlists…again this is just my opinion…not fact.

Our college advisor said that if it’s not a no, you might be on unofficial waitlist. You may hear nothing, but should reach out by April 1 to ask for a status update.

Is it acceptable to ask where you are on the waitlist? Or is that bad form?

@TheatreDad69 - I see your logic but the large numbers of programs being auditioned for now are just an extension of what’s been happening for several years. The programs know their historical yield trend, they’ve seen the applications increase and they adjust the number they accept based upon anticipated yield. I would not want anyone to lose hope - waitlists do move - but don’t count on it either. Love the programs that love you back first … and keep on the waitlist for schools you still love more, just in case that domino affect kicks in.

@mtmam2024 You can sure ask, but in most cases, the waitlist is not ordered 1-20. It’s based on your type, voice -range, etc. So basically, you need someone of that same description to release their spot.

The kids were communicating on facebook last year regarding waitlists, who was releasing their acceptance to free up extra spots, etc. There will be a lot of movement in April and even May. Feel free to communicate with the schools you are waitlisted on to see where you stand and how they determine who comes off next…
