Waitlist stats comparison of last year to this year projections

UW chose to wait list a lot of people last year. Many did get in (eventually), but what a stressful situation and last year was very different from previous years with regard to the sheer numbers on the waitlist. Does anyone have detailed #'s on how many were waitlisted and how many of those were ultimately accepted. I saw the link to the complete UW admission statistics but it doesn't mention anything about those waitlisted. I think that could be crucial information for those with decisions that need to made.

Does anyone know if UW plans to take the same approach this year for entering freshman fall 2010?

My daughter just applied. Stats pretty good (SAT 2010 - CR 600/M680/W740 and 3.79 GPA -UW, in state and some AP classes) but you never know who's going to read the essay, make the decision as to which pile to put her in (accept, deny or waitlist).

As an FYI her application was submitted 11/23 as of today her status says "awaiting initial review".

I doubt that it is an issue of how many they want to waitlist. Rather, it’s more about who applies and when that the admissions folks could go either way on accepting.

Look at it this way: If one kid applies with a 3.6 GPA, a 1200 CR+M SAT, decent ECs and essays on November 1st, they will probably want to WAIT and look over the 4.0 kids with 2200 SATs and amazing ECs who applies January 9th (the deadline) so that they won’t be forced to decline the obviously superior candidate.

Basically, it all depends on the individual. And based off of the brief info from your daughter, chances are they will accept her so long as her essays are solid and ECs are good too. Don’t expect a denial, but being waitlisted is a vague possibility.

It’s good that she applied early.

Thanks for the reply Zack. This afternoon her application status changed to “we have received all materials required to review your application…We will notify you by postal mail when a decision is made.” She was pretty excited that at least it’s been acknowledged. Now it’s just a waiting game.

Her older sister goes to UW (and in the honors program) and my husband and I both are alums. I wonder if any of that matters? Probably not…but maybe?

These boards are great, lots of info. I appreciate the time and effort people put in to answer questions. Thanks!

Hmm. I applied to UW-Seattle the same day as your daughter did but MyUW page still says, “Your application is awaiting an initial review.” So it has been over two weeks and nothing has changed for me. Am I missing something?

@Pbgayte: Typically, first-generation looks better than having college-graduated family members. But it shouldn’t play a significant role in their decision. Who knows, since it’s a family thing, it might even help.

@Udubhopeful: Scroll down to the bottom of that application status page. If it shows that they’ve received your SAT scores, then it’s just a matter of waiting. If no test scores show up, you might need to contact the collegeboard/UW.
